HC hands over letters to lawyers made senior last week

New Delhi: For the first time, Delhi high court Wednesday handed over letters to lawyers who were recently conferred the senior advocate tag.Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya, accompanied by senior judges of HC, handed over the letters to the lawyers in a small ceremony within the HC premises.Last week, a full bench released a list of 85 lawyers it designated as senior advocates after receiving 86 names from a special committee which vetted over 200 names for the purpose.CJI Upadhyaya said the “only expectation from all of you is that everyone will follow ethics and make others follow ethical norms in court”, while highlighting that the freshly minted advocates abide by the status and stature of a senior.Justice V K Rao revealed that with more than 200 applications, the permanent committee had to “draw the line” and cleared 85.Congratulating those present, Justice Prathiba M Singh said the judgment evaluation committee, which examined the candidate’s contribution in helping the court lay down law, “worked very hard”.Senior advocate Sanjay Jain, who was part of the permanent committee, also welcomed the designated lawyers, 11 out of whom are women.Around 200 lawyers were assessed by the high court’s permanent committee for conferring senior designation.The committee included the CJI and the two senior-most judges, Justices V Kameswar Rao and Nitin W Sambre, along with Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma, senior advocate Jain and Delhi High Court Bar Association President N Hariharan.
