NEW DELHI: A day after the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) “Sansad Chalo” march ended in clashes with police, the party on Tuesday accused the Delhi Police of using excessive force against protesters and alleged that volunteers were beaten, dragged on roads and seriously injured during the crackdown.CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke apologised to supporters, particularly women protesters, over the alleged police action and said the party could have done more to protect them.“I apologise to all our supporters, especially the girls who were brutally beaten by male police officers. We could have done better. I could have done better to protect you from the inhumane actions of the Delhi Police,” Dipke said in a post on social media.Targeting the government over the protest, he alleged that “to protect one Dharmendra Pradhan”, authorities were willing to use force against young protesters. He also urged those injured during the protest to contact him personally.“To protect one Dharmendra Pradhan, who is responsible for the deaths of more than 20 students, the Govt was willing to spill the blood of many more young students. If you were injured and see this, please DM me. I want to speak to you personally and apologise, ” Dipke said.“We will keep fighting for all of you,” he added.CJP national spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka also accused police of resorting to violence during Monday’s protest march, alleging that several protesters were assaulted and injured.“On yesterday’s protest march, it was just the police who used lathis. Our youths were beaten up, their heads cracked open, they were dragged on streets,” Ranka said.He alleged that Sonam Wangchuk’s wife Gitanjali Angmo’s hair was pulled while police were trying to remove her from the truck used during the march. He further claimed that the ribs of one of the volunteers were fractured during the alleged police action.“We had never expected or seen such brutality. Delhi Police crossed all limits yesterday. Clearly, they were given instructions to beat up people,” Ranka alleged.Ranka said the alleged police action would only expand the movement and more people would join the protest in Delhi. “We will not move from here until Dharmendra Pradhan resigns,” he said.On the meeting with government representatives after the protest, Ranka alleged that no response was received from the authorities despite discussions lasting five hours.“We did not receive any response. Five hours were wasted. If the government wants to talk to us, they will now have to come here,” he said.The Delhi Police has claimed that protesters turned violent during the march, alleging stone-pelting and damage to public property during the clashes.More than 170 people, including police personnel and protesters, were injured during the confrontation.
