Fake cop, real khaki: Civil defence volunteer playing cop lands in police net

New Delhi: In the streets of northeast Delhi, a crisp khaki uniform carries a weight of authority and, for one civil defence volunteer, it became the perfect disguise to “turn” a cop. By day, he was a regular hand at the Nand Nagri SDM office. At night, the 26-year-old slipped into a Delhi Police constable’s uniform, passing himself off as a cop near Jawahar Nagar picket in Karawal Nagar.His act came to an abrupt end Sunday night when a team intercepted him, acting on a specific tipoff. On being challenged, he confidently identified himself as “constable Shahrukh Khan” posted at Karawal Nagar police station, but a quick verification revealed that no officer by that name was posted there. The man was arrested.Police suspect that he used the uniform to project authority and carry out checks while posing as a police officer. The exact motive and whether he benefited financially from it are being investigated, said police.Anti-Auto Theft Squad received information around 9.40pm that a civil defence volunteer was posing as a Delhi Police officer. The team reached the spot within minutes and the man was arrested after the initial questioning.The accused was identified as 26-year-old Shahrukh Khan, a resident of Mandola village in Ghaziabad’s Loni. A Delhi Police constable’s uniform was seized from him.A case under sections 204 (personating a public servant) and 205 (wearing garb or carrying token used by public servant with fraudulent intent) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered at Karawal Nagar police station. Investigators are trying to ascertain how long he had been posing as a police officer and whether he used the disguise to commit other offences.
