Committed to mitigating West Asia crisis impact: Centre

Says ensuring uninterrupted fuel, LPG supply
Advises citizens to avoid panic purchase

New Delhi: In light of the conflict in West Asia, the government on Sunday expressed its firm commitment to mitigate the sufferings of people, saying it remains actively engaged in ensuring preparedness and seamless functioning across key sectors.
The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas listed steps that are being taken by various key ministries in the areas of energy supply, maritime operations, and assistance to Indian nationals in the region.
Keeping in view the evolving situation, including around the Strait of Hormuz, the Centre continues to take necessary measures to ensure smooth and uninterrupted supply of petroleum products and LPG across the country.
‘’The government is making all efforts to ensure availability of Petrol, Diesel and LPG, and citizens are advised to avoid panic purchase of petrol and diesel as well as unnecessary booking of LPG,’’ an official press note said.
It advised citizens to beware of rumours and rely only on official sources for correct information. Citizens were requested to use digital modes for booking of LPG cylinders and avoid visiting LPG distributors unless necessary. They were also encouraged to use alternate fuels such as PNG, induction and electric cooktops wherever feasible.
The Centre said that despite the war situation, it has given highest priority to domestic LPG and PNG, along with high priority to hospitals and educational institutions. Alternate fuel options like Kerosene and coal have been offered to ease pressure on the LPG demand. States have been advised to facilitate the new PNG connections for both domestic and commercial consumers.
The government said raids continue to be carried out in many of the States/Union Territories to check the hoardings and black marketing of LPG. Since March, more than 50,000 cylinders have been seized.
It said no dry-out has been reported at LPG distributorships. LPG cylinder bookings increased to 95% on an industry basis yesterday.
Regarding the crude position and refinery operations, the government said all refineries are operating at high capacity, with adequate crude inventories in place. The country is also maintaining sufficient stocks of petrol and diesel. Domestic LPG production from refineries has been increased to support domestic consumption.
Regarding the safety of Indian nationals in the region, the government said Indian Missions and Posts remain in close contact with the Indian community, while continuing to provide assistance and issue necessary advisories for their safety and well-being.
A total of 345 Indian fishermen stranded in Iran returned home yesterday. The Embassy in Tehran facilitated their movement from South Iran to Armenia, from where they boarded flights to Chennai.
