New EPFO portal: Faster claims, smarter processing & more — what changes for employees

New EPFO portal goes live! The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) completed the migration of all member records to a centralised database on Wednesday, restoring online services for members and employers. The large-scale database consolidation and software upgrade, shifts member records from a decentralised architecture to a centralised database. According to Union labour and employment minister Mansukh Mandaviya, the new system will automatically pre-validate member claims before they reach EPFO offices for processing. The automated checks will identify any deficiencies, discrepancies or missing information at the initial stage. Members will be informed of such issues in advance and guided on the corrections required, a move aimed at reducing claim rejections and improving first-time claim acceptance.

New EPFO portal: What changes for PF members

  • Claims checked before processing: All PF claims will now undergo automated pre-validation before reaching EPFO offices.
  • Errors flagged upfront: Members will be informed in advance if there are any discrepancies, missing details or mistakes in their claims.
  • Guidance to fix issues: The system will tell members what needs to be corrected, helping reduce claim rejections and improve first-time claim acceptance.
  • Check withdrawal eligibility before applying: Members can now see how much they are eligible to withdraw under different PF withdrawal categories before submitting a claim.
  • Unified member dashboard: The new portal allows members to view their membership details, provident fund balances, claim status, pensionable service records and benefits availed from a single digital interface.
  • Faster interest credit: Interest for FY 2025-26 at 8.25%, estimated at over Rs 1.44 lakh crore for around 34 crore member accounts, will be auto-processed and verified before being credited. Members are expected to see the interest reflected in their passbooks by July 15.
  • Higher auto-settlement limit: A substantial proportion of fully KYC-linked advance claims of up to Rs 5 lakh will now be processed through auto-settlement. Earlier, the limit was Rs 1 lakh.
  • Automatic PF transfer on changing jobs: Aadhaar-linked UAN-based provident fund accounts will be transferred automatically when members take up new employment, removing the need to submit a separate transfer request.
  • Online response to EPFO queries: Where additional information is required, members can respond online, reducing the need to visit EPFO offices.
  • Faster claim payments: Settlement amounts will be routed through a centralised payment architecture and credited directly to members’ bank accounts on the day of settlement.
  • More flexibility for pensioners: EPS pensioners can approach any PF office for services or to submit life certificates, while pension claims can be processed by any regional office and paid into any bank account across the country.
  • Additional checks for two weeks: Claims and service requests will undergo extra verification and validation during the post-migration stabilisation period.
  • Access from any location: The centralised system is also designed to improve EPFO’s operational efficiency by allowing member service requests to be processed from any authorised location across the country. Earlier, services were tied to a particular regional office.

Some claims and services could take slightly longer than usual during the stabilisation phase. EPFO has also advised members not to repeatedly access online services during peak hours or submit multiple requests for the same service. The migration also introduces a centralised payment architecture that will route claim settlements through faster electronic payment channels, ensuring secure and timely credit of settlement amounts directly into members’ bank accounts. The announcement comes after EPFO temporarily suspended its online services to carry out the migration exercise. The process began on June 26, when access to the Member Interface and Employer Interface was suspended.

Did loco pilot stop train for samosas? Western Railway says video is 'false and misleading'
The video, shared widely on social media, shows a man identified as the loco pilot walking to a shop beside the railway tracks, purchasing a packet of samosas and returning to a halted train.

INDORE: A viral social media video showing a train apparently halting mid-route just so the ‘loco pilot’ could buy samosas has triggered a massive storm online, forcing Western Railway to issue a stern clarification debunking the claims. The video, reportedly filmed in Rangwasa Road area of Rau near Indore, rapidly circulated with claims that the Indore-Mhow DEMU passenger train frequently stops for a few minutes at this particular spot.In the footage, a man is seen standing at a roadside shop next to the tracks purchasing snacks before walking back and boarding the locomotive, after which the train moves forward.

However, railway authorities have rubbished the narrative, calling it false and far from the facts.According to Mukesh Kumar, the public relations officer for Western Railway’s Ratlam Division, the video does not even feature a passenger train.

“The reality is that a Concor Greenfield Private Terminus goods train—operated by loco numbers 27237 and 27600—was already stationary at the Rau yard home signal due to pre-scheduled engineering work,” Kumar said, adding that the train was not stopped under any circumstances for food or any other personal work.”Furthermore, officials clarified that the individual seen in the video was not the on-duty assistant loco pilot, but rather a “spare” assistant loco pilot traveling on the train.“Since the goods train was already on an authorized operational halt, he stepped off to buy food. The actual working crew remained at their designated posts inside the engines, ensuring the train was fully secured and compliant with safety protocols at all times” he said.Western Railway emphasized that the clip was selectively edited and twisted to create confusion among the public. Reiterating that trains are strictly governed by rigid operational rules and safety standards, the administration clarified that no train is ever halted for personal convenience.

'I can touch 160 kph one day': Ashok Sharma wants to bamboozle batters with pace | Exclusive
Ashok Sharma is included in India T20I squad for Zimbabwe.

NEW DELHI: Ashok Sharma was over the moon when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) asked for his passport and he got the visa for Ireland. He was expecting a call-up for the Ireland tour but was overlooked.Kaafi umeed badh gayi thi, ye sab pehli baar ho raha tha (My hopes were really high because all this was happening for the first time),” Ashok tells TimesofIndia.com from Bengaluru, where he is playing in the Emerging Men’s tournament.“When the management asked for my passport for the Ireland series, I was hopeful. But when I was not picked in the squad, I knew I would get my chance because there was so much cricket coming up. I remained patient,” says Sharma, who has now earned his maiden India call-up for the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, starting on July 23.In the last nine months, Ashok Sharma has gone from a domestic pace sensation to India’s newest fast-bowling prospect. He shattered an 11-year-old Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy record with 22 wickets for Rajasthan, turned heads with his express pace for Gujarat Titans, earned an India A call-up as an injury replacement, and has now broken into the senior Indian team.

I never want to compromise on my pace. My focus is always on improving my bowling. If everything goes well, maybe I can touch 160 kph one day.

Ashok Sharma

The main reason behind his rapid rise has been his pace, and the 23-year-old does not want to compromise on the weapon that has earned him recognition. Having already clocked 154.2 kph, he believes he can touch 160 kph one day.“I never want to compromise on my pace. My focus is always on improving my bowling. If everything goes well, maybe I can touch 160 kph one day, but I don’t think too much about that. I just want to keep getting better and become more skilful,” says Sharma. The 23-year-old pacer laughs while reminiscing about his maiden overseas trip, when he flew to Sri Lanka with the Tilak Varma-led India A team. A reel of his stunning catch during India’s must-win match against Afghanistan A went viral.Mast tha. Pehli baar desh ko represent kar raha tha, kaafi maza aaya, kaafi special tha. (It was great. I was representing India for the first time. It was very special and I really enjoyed it),” he says.Ashok joined the team as an injury replacement for Yudhvir Singh, and the tour proved fruitful as he got to work with former India pacer Lakshmipathy Balaji, who was the bowling coach of the India A team.“It was a great experience working with Lakshmipathy Balaji sir. He didn’t try to change too many things. He suggested a few improvements, especially regarding my non-bowling arm, and advised me to keep working hard. He said the rewards would come,” says Sharma.

Over the years, Ashok has worked with several big names. At Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), former India bowling coach Bharat Arun fine-tuned his bowling action and taught him what it takes to stay fit as a fast bowler. At Rajasthan Royals (RR), Shane Bond advised him never to compromise on his pace. At Gujarat Titans (GT), Ashish Nehra took him under his wing and stressed the importance of hitting the hard length in every format.“Everyone has a similar message. They don’t try to teach too many different things. Every bowler has different strengths. Someone relies on swing, someone on pace, and everyone has to work on their strengths,” he says.

Pat Cummins told me to focus on making that even better instead of trying to become someone else. If I spend too much time chasing swing, I may not be able to bowl as fast.

Ashok Sharma

Among them all, the one conversation that has stayed with him was with Pat Cummins during his time at KKR.“When I was with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2022, Pat Cummins asked me what my biggest strength was. I said my ability to hit the hard length. Cummins told me to focus on making that even better instead of trying to become someone else. If I spend too much time chasing swing, I may not be able to bowl as fast. The idea has always been to strengthen what I already do well. Maine likh rakha hai unke advices ko (I have written down his advice),” says Ashok.Ashok has also impressed his Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill with his ability to bowl at 150 kph and deliver a 110 kph slower ball with the same action. He explains how he developed the deceptive delivery while playing cash-prize tournaments in Jaipur.

“I started my cricket at an academy and also played local cash-prize tournaments. At that time, I used to bowl around 130-135 kph but didn’t know how to bowl slower deliveries. I only had an off-cutter, which batters could pick easily. My coach, the late Vivek Yadav, suggested I learn the back-of-the-hand slower ball. It wasn’t easy at first and took a lot of practice. Later, in a cash-prize tournament semifinal, I took six wickets, including four with that delivery. That gave me confidence that it could become one of my main weapons,” he says.Although Ashok had been part of other IPL franchises before, Gujarat Titans gave him an extended run, and he credits captain Gill for backing him.“Shubman bhai was very supportive right from the start,” he says.

Shubman bhai was very supportive right from the start. He always gave me the freedom to express myself and never put me under pressure. He always guided me in the right direction.

Ashok Sharma

“He always gave me the freedom to express myself and never put me under pressure. He would tell me to back my strengths and not try to do too much. Whenever I was in two minds during a match, I would ask him for advice because he has a lot of experience, and he always guided me in the right direction,” he adds.Ashok admits his journey has just begun, but he has already set a long-term goal for himself: to play Test cricket because he believes he has the ability to bowl long, hostile spells. In the four-day Emerging tournament, which starts on Wednesday at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, he hopes to impress the selectors with the red ball.

“The journey has just begun. Like every cricketer, it is my dream to represent India in all formats. I would definitely love to play red-ball cricket for my country. From Wednesday, we have a four-day red-ball match at the CoE. This Emerging tournament will be a great opportunity for me to show my worth with the red ball,” he says.Ashok is among India’s exciting new crop of fast bowlers, whom the selectors believe have immense potential. Harshit Rana has already established himself in white-ball cricket. Prince Yadav and Gurnoor Brar have impressed in the opportunities they have received, while Mayank Yadav has returned to the Indian team after a lengthy injury layoff.

“Healthy competition is always important. If there is no competition, you won’t push yourself to improve. Competition motivates you to become better every day. Be it speed or wickets, it helps you grow as a cricketer,” he says. For now, Ashok’s biggest weapon remains his pace. But beyond the speed gun, the 23-year-old is determined to become a complete fast bowler. With an India debut now within touching distance, he hopes the journey that began on dusty grounds in Rampura, around 35 km from Rajasthan’s capital Jaipur, is only gathering pace.

He was just 14 when he cracked JEE Advanced, now, this Hindi-medium student from UP is inspiring a generation of young learners

He was just 14 when he cracked JEE Advanced, now, this Hindi-medium student from UP is inspiring a generation of young learners
Yuvraj Singh Solanki. (Photo: PW)

At an age when most children are worrying about school exams in Class 8 or 9, Yuvraj was preparing for one of India’s toughest entrance examinations. He wasn’t studying in Kota. He didn’t come from an English-medium school. And he wasn’t surrounded by students much older than him because of chance. At just 14 years old, the student from Chauri Chaura in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur district cleared JEE Advanced, earning a category rank of 1640 after preparing for just one year through an online Hindi-medium coaching programme. His extraordinary achievement has drawn comparisons with young cricket sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi, with many calling Yuvraj Singh Solanki the “Vaibhav Suryavanshi of the IIT-JEE world.” While the two have excelled in completely different fields, their stories share a common thread: age did not define their potential.

How did a 14-year-old become eligible for JEE Advanced?

One question naturally comes to mind: how could someone so young appear for JEE Advanced? The answer lies in Yuvraj’s exceptional academic journey.Recognising his academic ability early on, his schools allowed him to skip two grades during his education. Because of his age, administrative approvals were required before he could be admitted to higher classes. As a result, while many teenagers his age were in middle school, Yuvraj was already studying in Class 12, surrounded by classmates who were typically 17 or 18 years old.According to a The Times of India report, his classmates welcomed and supported him, while his school ensured that his JEE preparation could continue alongside regular academics.Instead of viewing his age as a limitation, everyone around him focused on his ability to learn.

A Hindi-medium student who proved talent has no language

Perhaps the most inspiring part of Yuvraj’s story is not just his age.It is the fact that he prepared through a Hindi-medium online batch. For decades, many families believed that cracking examinations like JEE Advanced required moving to coaching hubs, studying in English and spending lakhs of rupees on expensive classroom programmes. That perception is steadily changing. With access to quality online education, students are increasingly demonstrating that determination and good teaching matter more than geography or language.Yuvraj’s success is another reminder that talent can flourish in any classroom—whether it is in a metropolitan coaching institute or a small town connected through the internet. For thousands of Hindi-medium aspirants, his achievement sends a powerful message that language need not become a barrier to excellence.

What parents can learn from Yuvraj’s journey

Stories of young achievers often make headlines, but they can also create unrealistic expectations. It is important to remember that Yuvraj’s journey is exceptional precisely because it is uncommon. The bigger lesson is not that every child should skip grades or begin preparing for competitive examinations at an early age.Rather, it is about recognising and nurturing individual potential.Children who perform exceptionally often grow up in environments where curiosity is encouraged, questions are welcomed and learning is driven by genuine interest rather than fear.Instead of comparing children with others, parents can focus on understanding what excites them, how they learn best and where their natural strengths lie.Experts also emphasise that emotional well-being is just as important as academic achievement. Adequate sleep, healthy eating, regular breaks and supportive conversations create an environment where children can perform to the best of their abilities without feeling overwhelmed.

Success has no fixed age

Yuvraj’s story is about much more than clearing JEE Advanced at 14.It is about what becomes possible when talent is recognised early, the right guidance is available and learning is made accessible. His achievement also reflects the changing face of education in India, where online learning, regional-language content and flexible academic pathways are opening new opportunities for students across the country. For every student preparing for competitive examinations, his journey carries an encouraging reminder. You don’t have to come from a big city, study in an English-medium school or follow someone else’s path to achieve something extraordinary.Sometimes, all it takes is curiosity, discipline and the courage to believe that your age—or your language—does not define your potential.Disclaimer: This article is based on publicly reported information about Yuvraj’s academic journey. Every child’s educational path is unique, and parents should avoid comparing children or accelerating academic progression without considering their individual abilities, interests and overall well-being.

Patients Face a Thicket of Red Tape Trying To Maintain Consistent Health Coverage

0

By the time Derion Blackman collapsed in front of a Dollar General in Kissimmee, Florida, in March, he had been waiting two months to regain access to some of the vital medications he’d been taking since undergoing a heart transplant two years ago.

“He was on a nasty, dirty ground in front of a store,” recalled Sonja Smith, who is enraged about the circumstances that led to her husband’s heart failure. “He didn’t deserve to die like that.”

Problems started last year when the couple learned the monthly premium payment for their Federal Employees Health Benefits plan would more than double to $307 and their deductible would also go up. They decided to switch Blackman’s primary coverage to CHAMPVA, a health benefits program for dependents of disabled veterans, which had no premium and a $3,000 deductible.

Smith thought she and Blackman had carefully prepared so that the transition between health plans would be seamless. It was anything but.

After the new health plan became active in January, Smith said, Blackman faced one hurdle after another getting approval for the antirejection medications needed to prevent his body from attacking his transplanted heart. Patients who rely on these drugs can develop severe and life-threatening heart issues if they miss even a few days. She said Blackman had enough medication to last only about a month into the new plan year. He told her just before his death that he had run out.

“I screamed at CHAMPVA. I screamed at the Trump administration. I screamed at the overall healthcare system in this godforsaken country,” she said. “Everybody played a part in what happened to my husband.”

The Department of Veterans Affairs declined to comment on the record about Blackman’s case.

While the couple’s situation was extreme, their challenge of trying to continue a treatment is faced by many who shop for cheaper options as health insurance costs have soared across the country. The United States already has a fragmented health system, in which insurers, clinicians, and drugmakers are largely left on their own to hash out the cost of each medication or service. That lack of standardization leads to layers of bureaucracy for patients; moving to a new plan can ensnare patients in a thicket of red tape, keeping them from care.

Making matters more challenging, Congress didn’t renew covid pandemic-era subsidies that helped lower premiums for Affordable Care Act marketplace plans before this year. The Trump administration is also adding hurdles for people to access Medicaid, a state-federal health insurance program for Americans with low incomes or disabilities, so more people may lose their current coverage.

“We’ve basically set up a series of cracks in our healthcare system that we ask people to jump over,” said Adrianna McIntyre, an assistant professor of health policy at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. “But if you don’t jump over those cracks, you can lose coverage, or lose access to your doctor, or lose access to your medications.”

‘This Is a Lot’

Insurers calibrate plan prices by negotiating rates with individual clinicians, hospital systems, and drugmakers, leading to varying levels of coverage. Plans with lower monthly costs often have narrower networks of doctors and hospitals, and less generous drug coverage.

As a result, when patients choose an insurer — or even a new plan with the same insurer — they may lose access to medications or doctors that they have had for years, said Sabrina Corlette, a research professor in health policy at Georgetown University. There are so many ways “patients could get tripped up,” she said. “When you switch to a new insurance company, they’re going to apply their rules.”

In a pledge announced by the Trump administration last year, many insurers voluntarily agreed to reduce some red tape by honoring existing prior authorizations for 90 days when a patient switches health plans. As required by law, they also offer resources such as plain-language plan descriptions and searchable online clinician directories to help patients coordinate care, according to AHIP, the main health insurance industry trade group.

“The goal is to ensure every member understands their benefits and can access the care they need without interruption,” said Conner Coles, an AHIP spokesperson.

But patients say understanding their benefits can still be a challenge.

Monique Acosta, 54, had to navigate two health insurance changes after she was laid off from her job at a disability nonprofit in October. The heart transplant recipient and cancer survivor said she paid nearly $900 a month to continue her employer coverage under COBRA, the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act. Then, in January, the Woodbridge, Virginia, resident switched to Medicaid.

During the transitions, Acosta said, she lost coverage for a postchemotherapy drug. So, she changed her care team to qualify for lower-cost medications through a local hospital’s charity program. Then one of her new doctors reduced the frequency of an injection she had gotten for years. During that time, she said, her red and white blood cell counts plummeted and she struggled to recover from a heart catheterization procedure.

Eventually, her new physician upped the frequency of her injections back to twice a month. “He needed to document it so he could see it himself,” Acosta said. “I was very, very fatigued, very weak, and it’s unnecessarily so.”

Acosta said she is putting off a mammogram until she can better understand her Medicaid plan or find a job with better benefits. “This is overwhelming,” she said. “This is a lot.”

Burden on the Patient

Federal regulations, 43 states, and Washington, D.C., have continuity of care protections that require health plans to continue covering doctors and drugs when there is a network change, like when a clinician or hospital that a patient goes to is terminated from the insurer’s network of providers.

But Corlette said that not all the protections address the trip wires people face when they switch insurers on their own, such as during open enrollment or after a major life change.

Still, people can be proactive in a few ways about maintaining care when they change plans, said Shelli Quenga, an insurance agent in South Carolina.

She advises patients to keep written records of their medical and drug history for new providers. Quenga tells her customers to get their new insurance information to their doctors as soon as they switch, not to wait until an appointment. In addition, she said patients can request a case manager with their insurer so they don’t have to repeat their concerns to different staffers.

Even when a patient does homework, doctors can drop out of a network and insurers can change the contours of their plans, McIntyre said.

“Nobody has an incentive to make it make sense,” she said. “This puts a lot of burden on the patient.”

They Switched to a Lower-Cost Plan. Then the Bureaucracy Battle Began.

Sonja Smith and her husband, Derion Blackman, switched insurers last year when the premium payments for their previous plan were set to more than double. The couple planned to make the transition seamless. But after the new health plan became active in January, Smith said, Blackman faced one hurdle after another getting approval for the antirejection medications needed to prevent his body from attacking his transplanted heart. In mid-March, Blackman collapsed and died.

The cost-sharing program Blackman was part of, which has about 1 million enrollees, doesn’t work like traditional insurance. It has no networks or third-party appeals process, according to Caira Benson, a staffer at Code of Support Foundation, an organization that supports veterans. Instead, the program covers part of a patient’s cost of care.

Blackman qualified for the program because Smith was declared permanently disabled due to physical and mental injuries she sustained following an assault on an Air Force base during her service. CHAMPVA was Blackman’s secondary insurance previously.

One of his medications was about $800 a month, more than half his disability check. Knowing that these heart medications were crucial, Smith said, the couple in November called CHAMPVA, which she said confirmed it would cover the drugs. But they still got caught in red tape.

CHAMPVA had Blackman’s previous insurance listed as his primary, even though he had canceled that plan. That took six weeks to resolve. Some but not all of his medications came, because the health plan said his provider needed to clarify his prescriptions.

“Now I’m left here trying to piece together all the things that happened,” Smith said.

And she is full of regrets, too.

“I would have kissed him one more time before he walked out the door,” she said through sobs. “I feel so cheated.”

ED freezes TMC bank deposits worth Rs 440 crore in Kolkata

NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate issued orders to freeze the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC)’s bank deposits worth Rs 440 crore in Kolkata. The order came under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) on Wednesday. The action follows an ongoing money laundering probe into financial transactions linked to the TMC’s bank accounts. The agency alleged that over Rs 150 crore was routed through a network of aviation, travel and allied service companies, and is examining whether funds used for chartered flights during the party’s 2024 Lok Sabha campaign were layered through multiple entities to conceal their source. The probe began after a complaint filed in June alleged that proceeds of a major cyber fraud had been transferred into certain TMC bank accounts. Based on the complaint, police registered an FIR and froze debit transactions from three party accounts before the ED joined the investigation under the PMLA. Investigators are examining at least 18 TMC bank accounts, along with transactions involving firms such as Carewell Travels, Windborne Aviation and Anita Tours. As part of the investigation, the ED on Tuesday searched 5 locations in Kolkata, including the offices of Carewell Travels, an electoral trust and a chartered accountant, seizing documents and electronic devices. The agency is also looking into the acquisition of aircraft by Carewell Aviation between 2023 and 2026 and whether those purchases were linked to the suspected financial transactions.
