New Delhi: Delhi has recorded surplus rainfall for the first time this monsoon due to the ongoing wet patch.At 393.4mm, the city received 27% excess rainfall between June 1 and Aug 9, against a normal of 309.5mm. None of its districts is currently in the deficit rainfall category, while four are in the excess range.After the arrival of monsoon this year, Delhi was in the deficit-rainfall zone in June before transitioning to normal in July. The intense rain activity seen for five consecutive days at the beginning of Aug helped it record surplus rainfall.IMD, which analyses data for 10 districts in Delhi, stated that the Central district recorded the highest rainfall at 528.6mm, which was 39% above its normal of 381.2mm for the period.It was followed by West Delhi, which recorded 434.3mm against a normal of 342.7mm — an excess of 27%. South-East Delhi and East Delhi received an excess rainfall of 26% and 23%, respectively.Five districts, which have been placed in the normal category, are south Delhi, South-West Delhi, New Delhi, North-East Delhi and North-West Delhi. Of them, New Delhi witnessed the lowest rainfall with a surplus of just 7%. Data for North-Delhi was unavailable at the time of going to press.IMD classifies rainfall as deficit when it is less than -19%. If the rainfall is between -19% and 19%, it is classified as normal; between 20% and 59% is considered excess. It is categorised as large excess when the rainfall is 60% more than normal.In this monsoon so far, Delhi has seen three days of heavy rainfall — when it touches 65.5 mm or more in 24 hours — on July 9, July 29 and Aug 8. The showers on July 9 were this season’s first widespread and intense ones. Aug 8 was the season’s heaviest rainfall day with several areas in the city logging over 100 mm.On the night of Aug 10, IMD updated its data, putting Delhi’s excess rainfall at 25% — receiving 393.4mm against a normal of 315.4mm, from June 1 to Aug 10.The date of the withdrawal of monsoon for Delhi is Sept 25.Though Delhi has seen excess rainfall till now, northwest India has recorded normal rainfall. Between June 1 and Aug 9, it logged 313.6 mm of rainfall as opposed to the normal of 351.8 mm, a deficit of 11%. Of the nine sub-divisions in northwest India, Punjab, east Uttar Pradesh and east Rajasthan have reported a rain deficit of 35%, 26% and 21%, respectively.
