Tribunal orders Rs 44.69 lakh compensation to man whose leg was amputated in 2020 accident

New Delhi: A motor accident claims tribunal in Delhi has awarded Rs 44.69 lakh compensation to a 47-year-old man whose leg had to be amputated following a road accident in 2020.Presiding officer Shirish Aggarwal was hearing a petition filed by Sanjay, who said he was waiting in his e-rickshaw in Delhi Cantt on February 12, 2020, when a car being driven rashly and negligently hit his vehicle.In an order dated June 8, the tribunal noted that counsel for United India Insurance Company Ltd did not dispute the petitioner’s entitlement to compensation and argued only on the quantum to be awarded.The tribunal held that Sanjay was entitled to compensation for treatment, hospitalisation, medicines, transportation and other related expenses, as well as loss of income during treatment, future loss of earnings due to permanent disability and future medical costs.It further said he was entitled to damages for pain, suffering, trauma, loss of amenities and loss of expectation of life. Noting that his right leg below the knee had been amputated, leaving him with 60 per cent disability, the tribunal directed the insurer to pay Rs 44.69 lakh. PTI
