T’puram: IMA has announced its full support for govt’s ‘Toofan Care’ treatment and rehabilitation programme, a key component of state’s anti-drug campaign, ‘Operation Toofan’, aimed at addressing substance abuse through a comprehensive public health approach.An IMA delegation met home minister Ramesh Chennithala to discuss the initiative and assured cooperation in implementing the programme. The delegation included representatives of IMA mental health committee, IMA prevention of substance abuse committee, Indian Psychiatric Society and Indian Academy of Pediatrics.During the meeting, the IMA stressed that drug abuse should not be treated merely as a law-and-order issue but also as a major public health concern requiring medical intervention, counselling and long-term rehabilitation. Welcoming the association’s support, Chennithala said the IMA could play a pivotal role in ensuring the success of the programme. He asked the organization to prepare a district-level action plan in coordination with the police, district medical officers (DMOs), mental health professionals, healthcare workers and de-addiction and rehabilitation centres. The IMA said it would submit the plan within two days.As part of its proposed support, IMA will organize anti-drug awareness programmes in schools, colleges, NGOs, residents’ associations and community organizations. It also plans to establish an online counselling and guidance helpline for individuals struggling with substance abuse.The association will identify and map de-addiction, treatment and rehabilitation facilities across all districts to facilitate timely referrals and improve access to specialized care. It also proposed strengthening coordination between police, health authorities, psychiatrists and rehabilitation centres to ensure seamless treatment and follow-up.
