DEHRADUN: A 34-year-old househelp was arrested in Dehradun on Friday for allegedly stealing gold and diamond jewellery worth around Rs 10 lakh from the house where she worked. She was caught nearly a year later after the owner spotted her wearing the stolen jewellery in photos posted on Instagram.According to Dehradun SP (City) Pramod Kumar, the complainant, Nitisha Vats, initially believed she had misplaced the jewellery or that a relative had borrowed it without informing her. During this period, the accused, identified as Vimla Devi, a resident of Lakhimpur Kheri currently living in Dehradun’s Jakhan area, allegedly convinced Vats that she had simply forgotten where she had kept the ornaments.The case took a turn when one of Vats’ relatives noticed a woman wearing similar jewellery in social media photos and alerted her. On checking the images, Vats recognised her former househelp wearing what she identified as her missing jewellery.Vats lodged a complaint with Rajpur police on Wednesday, sharing links to the social media posts. Police registered a theft case, tracked down Devi and arrested her on Friday.During interrogation, Devi allegedly confessed that she stole the jewellery after seeing Vats keep it inside a closet. Police said she tried several times to sell the ornaments but failed because they were made of gold and diamonds.Police recovered the stolen jewellery, including a gold and diamond necklace, from her possession. She was produced before a local court on Friday and remanded to judicial custody.
