Heinous crimes dip 8% in city, thefts at 10-year low

New Delhi: Heinous crimes in Delhi have declined by 8% this year while the cases of motor vehicle theft and other thefts, where registration is online and police have no control over them, have decreased 21% and 15%, respectively, against last year. These are the lowest figures recorded in the past 10 years, police commissioner Satish Golchha said Wednesday. Speaking on Police Commissionerate Day, the CP said crimes against women had declined by nearly 17%, while the detection rate in such cases has reached 98%, among the highest in the country. “Nearly 95% of these cases have seen chargesheets being filed within the prescribed statutory time limit. During the current year, chargesheets were filed within two weeks in 35 Pocso and 172 street crime cases,” he added. The top cop said the statistics were a reflection of the emphasis of the force on crime prevention and technology-driven policing. “Offences registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita have reduced by 12%. PCR calls relating to robbery and snatching have also witnessed a substantial decline owing to improved police visibility and effective crime-control strategies,” Golchha added. On organised crime, the commissioner said Delhi Police had not only been targeting criminals but also their network and infrastructure providing them protection and logistical support. “As a result, the use of firearms in heinous crimes has declined by 27%. This has been achieved by targeted operations like gang-bust and action under MCOCA,” he disclosed. The CP also asserted that the safety of women, children and senior citizens remained the highest priority of Delhi Police.Referring to the apex-level Narco Coordination Centre meeting chaired by Union home minister Amit Shah, Golchha said the force had identified 123 ‘narcotics hotspots’ and a focused action had begun to “clean” them.Speaking on the occasion, lieutenant governor TS Sandhu quoted the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and emphasised that policing must continue to become more professional, sensitive and responsive while ensuring citizen-centric service delivery. LG noted that stricter traffic enforcement had become visible across the city and stressed that sustained public cooperation was essential to curb traffic violations such as wrong-side driving, triple riding and riding without helmets.LG promised the personnel of timely promotions and implementing a transparent and predictable transfer policy. Sandhu presented Ahat Veer Samman Patra to honour the police personnel who were injured or martyred while on duty. The first certificate was conferred posthumously on late constable Vikram, who was killed while stopping a speeding truck. Twenty-seven cops were presented Medal for Meritorious Service and Greater Kailash was adjudged the best police station in the city while PS Laxmi Nagar secured the second position.Delhi Police Act was enacted in 1978, introducing the commissionerate system with effect from July 1, 1978. From now on, Delhi Police will also observe July as Child Safety Awareness Month. Delhi Police has started a hybrid training programme for teachers under the initiative, which covers cyber safety, school security guidelines, NCPCR protocols and Pocso Act.
