NEW DELHI: The family of 70-year-old Urmila Bhardwaj, who was crushed to death between vehicles in Narela last Saturday, has donated her eyes.The family said it wanted to give Urmila a meaningful farewell by helping restore the gift of sight to someone else.Her eyes were donated to an eye bank in Daryaganj, allowing the family to turn their grief into an act of kindness.Devesh, Urmila’s grandson, said, “We wanted to donate more organs, but by the time we could make the arrangements, it was too late. When we learnt that her eyes could still be donated, we did not waste any time. We wanted someone else to be able to see.”The family described Urmila as a compassionate woman who devoted much of her life to caring for her family and animals.She regularly stepped out of her house to feed birds, animals and even insects. She went out for the same reason when she was caught in the collision Saturday.“The way her life was taken was horrific beyond words. She was standing at the corner of the street, feeding insects, when a reckless and negligent driver killed her,” Devesh said.He also expressed anguish over the investigation, saying that the family has not been informed about its progress.“We are not aware of the probe, and our statements have not been recorded. We are also not aware of the medical report of the accused even after 48 hours. I just want a fair probe into my grandmother’s death,” he said.The Mercedes-Benz driver involved in the crash was granted bail as the sections under which he was booked are bailable, police said.The accident took place around 8am on a narrow road in front of Gate No 1 of Himalaya Apartment in Mamurpur, Narela.Urmila was caught between vehicles after a Mercedes-Benz and a WagonR collided head-on.An FIR was registered after a complaint by Geeta Verma, the wife of the WagonR driver, Narendra Kumar.The couple and their child were travelling to Lajpat Rai Market when the crash occurred.When the Mercedes-Benz, being driven at high speed and in a rash manner, collided head-on with the WagonR, the impact pushed the WagonR backwards into a three-wheeler parked near a wall.Urmila, who was standing near the parked vehicle, was caught between the vehicles.Passersby rushed her to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
