NEW DELHI: An uproar broke out at the Delhi University Academic Council (AC) meeting Friday after some elected members demanded withdrawal of the varsity’s X post advising students against participating in the ongoing CJP-led protest, calling it partisan, patronising and an overreach by the administration.Raising the issue during Zero Hour, several members submitted a note to vice chancellor Yogesh Singh objecting to the official post. “The statement represents an overreach and should be immediately withdrawn from X. Protesting students are adult citizens of the country and are free to participate in struggles that are essentially a defence of their rights,” the note stated. It added that the university could not be seen playing a partisan role by attributing the protests to “vested interests” and that such messaging projected the institution in poor light. The varsity declined to comment on this when TOI reached out.The protest over the advisory also spilt outside the meeting, with teachers of Faculty of Law staging a demonstration in North Campus in solidarity with students allegedly assaulted by Delhi Police during the July 20 Sansad Chalo march.The issue came up as the AC considered a series of academic and administrative proposals. Among the key decisions, the council approved Late Shri Arun Jaitley Scholarship for undergraduate sportspersons. Funded through a Rs 10 lakh endowment for 20 years, the scholarship will support three undergraduate students participating in national or international-level sports every year, with at least one award reserved for a woman student. The annual awards will be presented on August 13, the day Jaitley was elected DUSU president in 1974.The council also approved renaming School of Open Learning (SOL) as Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE) in line with UGC regulations governing distance and online education.It also noted the vice chancellor’s approval granting a one-time relaxation to a section of detained law students, allowing those who had cleared at least five of the prescribed 15 papers to appear in higher semester examinations. The university has maintained that the relaxation, recommended by Faculty of Law’s Detention Resolution Committee, is a one-time measure in compliance with court directions and will not serve as a precedent.Among other approvals were proposals to increase MD seats in the departments of pharmacology and pathology at Maulana Azad Medical College, subject to approval by the National Medical Commission and the Union health ministry, and the introduction of the four-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (B.A. B.Ed.) at Lady Shri Ram College for Women from the 2026-27 academic session. The council also approved new certificate and diploma courses in Sanskrit Buddhism, a Master of Occupational Therapy programme at PDUNIPPD, and several new skill enhancement courses under the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework 2022, including entrepreneurship, design thinking and library and information literacy.
