New Delhi: A truck filled with stones and other construction material, which was parked near Jantar Mantar hours before the Cockroach Janta Party-led Chalo Sansad march on July 20, had been in police custody since it was involved in an accident on July 16.Delhi Police issued a clarification Tuesday after a news portal questioned the truck’s presence first near Jantar Mantar and then outside the Indian Youth Congress office on Raisina Road.In a statement, Delhi Police said the truck was not deliberately deployed there but was seized after an accident on July 16.“The truck was seized on 16.07.2026 in an accident case… It was initially parked near the police station for safe custody due to space constraints. Later it was emptied and shifted — after instructing the owner of the vehicle considering the “Chalo Sansad” movement — to a safer place,” it said.The police also said that at no point it was alleged by them that the protesters had anything to do with the truck or its contents.“Any claim linking the vehicle to a conspiracy against protesters is completely baseless. Citizens are advised not to spread unverified information,” the police said.According to police, seven people were injured after the dumper rammed into a Maruti Eeco van at the Firoz Shah Road–Kasturba Gandhi Marg crossing. An FIR was registered and both the damaged van and the truck were taken into police custody as case property.“It is clarified that claims alleging that Truck No. HR63 E 6865 being deliberately deployed by Delhi Police near Jantar Mantar or outside any political party office are false and misleading,” police said.When the number is keyed into the govt’s Parivahan app and details of impounding are sought it says, “Impound details – Yes”.Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke, on July 20, posted two videos of a truck bearing the same registration number parked at the protest site.“Truck loaded with stones has been parked at Jantar Mantar. What are the police authorities upto? Are they orchestrating stone-pelting on the peaceful CJP protesters?” he had posted on X at 6.24am. Images of the truck near Jantar Mantar were also shared by several other users on social media.The truck was later found parked outside the Indian Youth Congress office. In a video posted on Instagram on Saturday, Delhi Pradesh Youth Congress president Akshay Lakra can be seen questioning the police about the truck.“How is a truck parked in a no-entry zone… It has been here for three days, the Parliament is right here… Why is this truck parked here? No one has an answer… Why is the Delhi Police not removing it? As soon as we jumped in to see what’s inside, police officials appeared out of nowhere,” he can be heard saying in the video. Speaking to TOI, Lakra said the truck was removed within an hour of him making calls and posting the video on social media.
