Delhi Police Advises People To Not Enter New Delhi Amid Afternoon Violence

New Delhi: More than 30 people were injured in stone throwing in the Sansad Marg area Saturday, hours before the students’ protest by Cockroach Janta Party was dissolved.A senior police officer said the injured included over 20 police personnel, six people and three journalists.Delhi Police asked people to avoid going towards New Delhi “unless absolutely necessary” due to the large crowds in that part of the city, which also led to traffic congestion. “To prevent inconvenience and delay, travellers are requested to plan their journeys using alternative routes or bypasses,” the police post read.The violence between protesters and police began around 2 pm.Videos from the scene showed a section of protesters throwing stones as security personnel attempted to control the crowd.

As the intensity of the attack increased, police personnel were seen retreating to avoid the barrage of stones, while journalists covering the protest ran for cover. The footage captured chaotic scenes.Another video showed an injured policeman with blood streaming from a head wound. Fellow personnel rushed to assist him and move him away from the area of confrontation. A journalist reporting from the spot was also struck by stones. His microphone was damaged in the attack.Extra layers of barricades were put up around the protest site and on roads near it to regulate the movement of people and vehicles.
