New Delhi: Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has planted over 6 lakh plants, including over 37,000 trees and 6.2 lakh shrubs, within days of launching its annual mega planting drive, achieving nearly 30% of its target for the current season.The planting is being done according to the directions given by LG TS Sandhu, who asked officials to ensure not only planting, but also the long-term survival of the saplings.“LG Sandhu has been stressing on planting trees for ecological restoration, environmental sustainability and expansion of Delhi’s green infrastructure. The progress of the drive is being monitored to ensure effective implementation and the long-term survival of the plants,” an official said.The campaign began in the first week of July and will continue till mid-Sept.DDA aims to plant nearly 23 lakh native trees and shrubs as part of the larger mission of growing 70 lakh plants. This was launched by Union home minister Amit Shah under the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign on July 7. DDA has been assigned the responsibility of planting 23 lakh.Officials said the programme focuses on native and climate-resilient species. “Tree planting will not just enhance biodiversity. It will increase carbon sequestration, improve the city’s microclimate, strengthen ecological connectivity and contribute to better air quality, groundwater recharge and urban liveability,” an official said.The campaign is on in 675 DDA parks, the city’s four Ridge areas and six biodiversity parks, green corridors and other identified ecological restoration sites.DDA has partnered with resident welfare associations, educational institutions, religious organisations, volunteer groups and corporate bodies. “The authority aims to turn the campaign into a community-driven movement by encouraging citizens to take ownership of Delhi’s green spaces,” the official added.
