Cops turn heart of city into ring of steel

New Delhi: A multi-layered security ring turned central Delhi into a fortress Monday, with police deploying over seven-foot-high metal barricades, water cannons, signal jammers and anti-riot vehicles along roads leading to Parliament and Jantar Mantar, the site of CJP’s protest.Around 3,500 security personnel, including 30 companies of central armed police forces, were deployed from Sunday night and barricades were erected at more than 50 locations, a police officer said.On Monday morning, barricades carrying notices under Section 163 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), prohibiting public gatherings, were set up at several locations across south Delhi and along roads leading to Jantar Mantar.Similar strict security arrangements were visible on Lodhi Road, with police personnel stationed at almost every intersection, checking vehicles and closely monitoring their movement into the high-security zone.At Sunheri Marg, public address systems were installed to issue announcements directing people to disperse, whenever required.Security was equally tight outside govt offices, where police used loudspeakers to instruct staffers to queue up and show their identity cards at the entrance. Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel were also deployed at several govt complexes. At the Kerala Bhawan side of Jantar Mantar, police erected a multi-layered security cordon comprising three rows of zigzag barricades backed by two contingents of RAF and Delhi Police personnel. Ambulances were stationed, while water cannons, anti-riot vehicles and cops equipped with tear gas launchers remained on standby. A mobile command centre, equipped with facilities like those at Delhi Police’s main control room, was seen at the site to ensure uninterrupted communication among cops in case the main control room faced any network disruption. From early morning, police kept only a single narrow access lane open at every entry and exit point on key roads to regulate movement. Every stretch where protesters attempted to push through and move forward was immediately sealed off. Similar security arrangements, including welded barricades and additional layers of fortification, were put in place on the opposite carriageway of these roads to prevent anyone from marching towards Parliament.Signal jammers were also installed across parts of central Delhi, affecting mobile internet connectivity in areas stretching from Jantar Mantar to Mandi House and Janpath, with many commuters reporting difficulty accessing services. At Janpath, Delhi Police deployed its AI-enabled Ikshana surveillance van, equipped with 360-degree cameras capable of scanning crowds and instantly alerting teams on the field if it detects people matching the profiles of suspects or criminals.
