New Delhi: Delhi, which has recorded a rain deficit of 14% so far this monsoon, is likely to receive moderate showers Tuesday and Wednesday.Some parts of the city received very light rain Sunday.The maximum temperature was 36.6 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal. However, due to high humidity, the heat index or ‘feels-like temperature’ touched 44.5 degrees C at 11.30 am when the air temperature was 34.6 degrees C. The heat index further rose to 48 degrees C at 2.30 pm even as the air temperature was 35.8 degrees C.The minimum temperature settled at 27.6 degrees C, which is near normal for this time of the year.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), Safdarjung, the city’s base weather station, did not receive any rainfall from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm. Ayanagar and Pusa, though, logged .5 mm of rainfall each, while Lodhi Road and Ridge recorded ‘trace’ rainfall.“There are chances of very light to light rain over the next few days. A yellow alert is in place for moderate rain Tuesday and Wednesday when rain activity is expected to intensify,” said a Met official.However, no significant change in the maximum temperature is likely during the next 48 hours. There could be a fall of two to three degrees during the next seven days, the official added.In the ongoing monsoon season (June 1 to July 25), Delhi has recorded 247.8 mm of rainfall against a normal of 365.3 mm. However, IMD has placed the capital in ‘normal’ rainfall category. It classifies rainfall as ‘deficit’ when it widens to more than -19%. If the rainfall is between -19% and 19%, it is classified as ‘normal’, ‘excess’ if it is 20% to 59% and ‘large excess’ when it is 60% more than normal.Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘satisfactory’ category for the sixth consecutive day with the air quality index (AQI) recorded at 80.
