KOLKATA: A demolition drive targeting a Trinamool Congress party office linked to the party’s national general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee began in Amtala on Saturday, with district authorities alleging that the five-storey building lacked the required building sanction plan.The demolition was underway at the time of filing this report, with bulldozers deployed to bring down the structure.A heavy security presence was deployed at the site, with Bengal Police and Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel escorting the demolition team. The operation was being carried out under the supervision of the local Block Development Officer (BDO) and Block Land & Land Reforms Officer (BLLRO). Personnel from the state fire services department were also present at the spot. The entire area around the building was barricaded using guardrails as the demolition continued. According to district administration officials, a notice dated June 30 was issued to the party office, stating that the structure had been built without the required building sanction plan and directing the office-bearers to appear for a hearing on July 15. A reminder notice was pasted on the building on July 7. “However, there was no response to the notices. The district administration subsequently decided to initiate action, following which the demolition began on Saturday afternoon,” a district administration official said.
