NEW DELHI: A 48-year-old woman was killed after being hit by a BMW SUV while crossing a road in southwest Delhi’s Delhi Cantonment Tuesday. Her family and locals blocked the stretch leading to Terminal 3 of IGI Airport for almost an hour and demanded improved road safety measures. The driver of the car has been arrested.Police received the information around 12pm. Before a police team reached the spot, Jaiwanti, a 48-year-old resident of East Mehram Nagar, was shifted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. She was employed as a cleaning staff member with Delhi Cantonment Board and was returning home when she was hit by the SUV.The accused, 38-year-old Deepak, a resident of Pratap Nagar in Mandoli, has been employed as a driver for the past six months, an officer said. He was alone in the SUV and was returning from the airport when the accident took place, he added.Jaiwanti’s family members and locals blocked the road near Mehram Nagar, a crucial road leading to T3. “My mother worked as a cleaning staff member in Air Force Colony. She was crossing the road when the vehicle came at high speed and hit her,” her son claimed.He alleged that residents had repeatedly approached authorities seeking installation of speed breakers and a traffic signal at the spot. “This is an accident-prone stretch. Vehicles speed through this road and accidents happen frequently, but nobody listens to us,” he said.The family also alleged that the driver did not take Jaiwanti to hospital and demanded that Jaiwanti’s son be given a job by govt in the cantonment board.The protest disrupted traffic in the area, prompting Delhi Traffic Police to issue an advisory. Traffic movement between the NSG red light and T3 was affected as the road remained blocked due to the protest. Vehicles travelling from Mahipalpur towards T3 were diverted via the NH-48 cut at Mahipalpur, while the traffic from T3 towards Terminal 1, Dhaula Kuan and Mahipalpur was diverted at the Dhaula Kuan cut.Jaiwanti is survived by three daughters and a son, all of whom are married. Her husband had died and her son works as an ambulance driver.Police said a case had been registered. The exact circumstances leading to the accident, including the speed of the vehicle and whether negligence was involved, are being investigated, they said. CCTV footage from the area is also being examined. The car has been seized for forensic and mechanical inspection, police added.
