Sealing at coaching centres

New Delhi: Cracking down extensively on coaching centres operating in Delhi without adhering to safety guidelines despite issuing notices in the past, MCD sealed 36 properties and issued show-cause notices to six more properties till Monday. The decision has come in the wake of frequent fire incidents and the recent Lucknow coaching centre fire that claimed the lives of 15 people. In a report issued Monday, it was specified that from June 1-28, the civic body sealed 34 properties and on June 29, it sealed two properties. “Maximum sealing action was taken in Keshavpuram zone, where 23 coaching centres were sealed in the joint action. This is followed by central zone where seven properties were sealed and west zone where five properties were sealed. However, in Karol Bagh zone, only one property was sealed, according to the MCD report. In July, 2024, three students lost their lives after flooding of the basement of a coaching centre.Besides, from June 1-28, there were six properties issued sealing show cause notices, and three more were issued notices Monday. This includes action against three centres in Rohini, two in Karol Bagh and Shahdara south zone each and two in Keshavpuram zone. Officials said that the action will continue in the coming days.CM Rekha Gupta Saturday warned that coaching centres which fail to comply with mandatory safety norms will no longer be permitted to operate in Delhi. She informed that Delhi govt will soon introduce a robust regulatory law to ensure stricter oversight, greater accountability and aimed to prominently enhance student safety.“The centres have one month to get all the safety regulations adhered to. All the coaching institutes running in Delhi, be it 900 or 1000, the number doesn’t matter; what matters is the lives of the children studying there, their safety and security,” she said.Students are encouraged to report any negligence or lack of safety measures in their coaching centres via email, message, or phone, the chief minister added. Before this, even education minister Ashish Sood ordered a citywide safety crackdown on coaching centres.
