NEW DELHI: Police have arrested three people, including a former Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) employee of the Income Tax Department, for running a fake government job recruitment racket that duped unemployed aspirants by promising them MTS posts in the department. Police said the gang is suspected to have cheated at least six to seven victims of around Rs 10 lakh. The accused have been identified as Rohit Chauhan (37), a freelance placement agent; Chirag Aggarwal (41), an ex-MTS employee of the Income Tax Department at the Civic Centre; and Tarun Goswami (37), a freelance placement agent and property dealer. Another former MTS employee, Pawan Dutt Sharma (38), has been bound down in the case. Police said efforts are underway to trace the remaining accused, including the alleged mastermind. The case came to light after a resident of Ajmeri Gate lodged a complaint at Hauz Qazi police station on May 18, alleging he had been cheated on the promise of securing a government job.DCP (central) Rohit Rajbir Singh said, “The complainant first came in contact with the accused in Dec last year, when Chirag introduced himself as an Income Tax Department employee and assured him of arranging an MTS job. He was later introduced to Rohit , who conducted the recruitment process and collected money.”Believing the promises, the complainant transferred his entire provident fund savings through digital transactions and also paid cash, suffering a total loss of Rs 2.03 lakh. The accused used fake Income Tax verification forms to make the recruitment process appear genuine before becoming untraceable by March this year.During investigation, police tracked bank accounts and analysed technical evidence before arresting Rohit Chauhan from Rohini on July 3. Subsequent raids led to the arrest of Chirag and Tarun.Police said the gang targeted unemployed youth through social media advertisements offering vacancies in the Income Tax Department. Victims were charged between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 2 lakh each and asked to submit educational documents. To gain their confidence, fake interviews and orientation sessions were conducted inside the Income Tax Department offices and parking area at the Civic Centre. Victims were also handed fake verification forms and told their official identity cards were being processed, but no appointment letters or government IDs were ever issued.
