NEW DELHI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of northeast India, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds across several states, and heatwave conditions in isolated pockets of East Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha on Monday.Heavy rain warnings have been issued for Assam and Meghalaya and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, while thunderstorm activity is expected over parts of north, east, central and southern India. Gusty winds reaching up to 50 kmph are likely in several states.
IMD issues heavy rain, thunderstorm alert
According to IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Monday.Heavy rainfall is also likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe, Lakshadweep, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal and Telangana.Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph are likely at isolated places over Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, Jharkhand, Kerala and Mahe, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttarakhand and Vidarbha, among other regions.

For Delhi-NCR, IMD has forecast isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi.

Heatwave alert
Heatwave conditions are very likely at isolated places over East Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha on Monday, according to IMD.

Rainfall activity is expected to continue over northeast India during the week, with fairly widespread to widespread rain forecast over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is also likely over Coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe and Lakshadweep over the coming days.IMD has also forecast isolated heavy rainfall over northeast India and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the week.

The weather office has warned that heavy rainfall may lead to localised flooding of roads, waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic disruptions and reduced visibility in affected regions.Thunderstorms and strong winds may result in damage to trees, power and communication lines, while heatwave conditions could increase the risk of heat-related illnesses in vulnerable populations.
