TTD introduces high-tech safety steps to prevent wildlife encounters on Tirumala footpaths

Tirupati: In a direct response to wildlife movement along the pedestrian routes to the hill shrine, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has launched a comprehensive inter-departmental action plan to enhance the safety for trekking devotees.During a high-level review meeting held at Tirumala on Saturday, TTD additional EO Ch Venkaiah Chowdary directed the forest, vigilance, and engineering officials to implement permanent scientific interventions along the Alipiri footpaths. The new safety framework transitions TTD’s wildlife management from a reactive posture to a predictive, data-driven security model. As part of this overhaul, officials have been directed to analyse multi-year behavioural patterns and movement data of leopards and other wildlife, officially evaluating three major identified risk parameters to map vulnerable zones and neutralise potential animal-human conflicts before they occur.Furthermore, a permanent, highly specialised Emergency Response Team will be stationed near the Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, equipped with modern wildlife handling gear, dedicated transit vehicles, tactical communication systems, and advanced tracking technology for instantaneous deployment. To prevent predators and scavengers from being drawn to the pedestrian tracks, TTD will conduct a comprehensive audit on how commercial shops along the Alipiri path affect wild animal movements, while the health department enforces airtight food waste management protocols across the forest zone. Finally, a unified command structure comprising TTD, the state forest department, vigilance, engineering, and health wings will handle real-time data sharing and continuous monitoring of the routes.“Pilgrim safety remains our top priority. We are moving away from temporary fixes toward a permanent, technologically advanced ecological management system that ensures no devotee faces danger while fulfilling their vow of trekking to Tirumala”, Venkaiah Chowdary asserted.Providing context to the security upgrades, TTD divisional forest officer (DFO) Phanikumar Naidu presented a detailed power-point breakdown mapping the exact zones where leopard movements peaked over the last twenty-four months.
