NEW DELHI: An 10-year-old girl who was sleeping beside her family on a pavement in south Delhi was allegedly kidnapped, raped and murdered by a cab driver in the early hours of June 22, police said.Police said the accused, Basu Kumar Singh, was under the influence of marijuana when he allegedly took the child to an isolated stretch near the Faridabad-Gurgaon border, sexually assaulted her, strangled her with a piece of cloth and then smashed her chest with a stone.Police said he then covered the body with a pile of stones in an apparent attempt to conceal the crime and destroy evidence.During the investigation, police claimed the accused spotted the girl sleeping on a footpath with her family, stalked her for around 45 minutes from his cab and then decided kidnap her at the right moment. The father was reportedly awakened by the girl’s desperate cries of “Papa, save me,” and chased the cab with a stick, but the perpetrator fled the scene.
Longitude-Latitude of cab nailed suspect
Following the abduction, rape, and murder, Singh allegedly attempted to operate with professional precision to cover his tracks. He changed his clothes on the roadside and thoroughly scrubbed the vehicle to remove forensic evidence before returning to work as usual, even accepting a ride from Chakkarpur in Gurgaon to Nangloi.
Case and probe findings
The breakthrough came from the victim’s father, whose memory of a white car with a yellow commercial plate provided the critical lead.A massive police operation involving nine teams and supervised by DCP Anant Mittal tracked the suspect by cross-referencing GPS coordinates from the cab aggregator with footage from 70 CCTV cameras. Police also utilized technical surveillance to track the vehicle after visiting the suspect’s brother’s accommodation in Gurgaon. In a critical error, Singh switched his phone back on to accept a new ride, allowing police to pinpoint his location as he headed toward Vikaspuri, where he was arrested just seven hours after the initial 5. 00am police call.
Child cried out to Papa for help
Investigators informed that Singh is a habitual offender with at least five cases registered against him in his hometown of Khagaria, Bihar, between 2015 and 2022, including charges for attempted murder, rioting, and molestation.Police seized the clothes Singh wore during the incident and recovered CCTV footage of him cleaning his vehicle near his employer’s residence in Gurgaon, an act witnessed by a security guard.Singh was employed by an aspiring businessman named Ankit, who had hired him in February 2026 after Singh was verified by a cab aggregator.Ankit, who previously knew Singh when he worked as a security guard at his housing society, stated that his interactions with Singh were limited to rental collections and that he was unaware of Singh’s criminal history.During interrogation, Singh confessed to the crimes and led investigators to the girl’s body. He noted that he was familiar with the 12km stretch between the abduction and dumping sites because he frequently drove in that area.Following these events, the victim’s father has demanded capital punishment for Singh.
