Quote of the Day by Julie Sweet: ‘I have an unwavering commitment to inclusion and diversity’
Quote of the day by Julie Sweet

Julie Sweet has led Accenture, one of the world’s largest professional services companies with roughly 770,000 employees across more than 120 countries, since 2019. A few themes have run through her public statements but one stands out and none of them is as consistently as this one. Unlike a lot of corporate language on the subject, which tends to stay vague and aspirational, Sweet has repeated this stance across interviews and reports for close to a decade. That repetition is itself part of the message: a position she keeps restating on the record.

Quote of the day by Accenture CEO Julie Sweet

“I have an unwavering commitment to inclusion and diversity.”

What Julie Sweet’s quote means

The word doing the heavy lifting here is “unwavering”. The quote adjusts a goal, a target and a program with a fixed personal position, framed as something that doesn’t move regardless of business conditions, market pressure or the broader corporate climate. That’s a stronger claim than most companies make about their own values, and it’s also a harder one to walk back gracefully, which matters, given what’s happened since. There’s also a shift worth noticing in how the sentence is built. Sweet says “I,” not “Accenture” or “we.” Most corporate diversity language is written to sound institutional and permanent. But Sweet’s phrasing puts her own name behind it, tying her personal credibility to the outcome rather than hiding behind the company’s.

A message tested by real events

Sweet has used language like this publicly not long after taking over as CEO, and repeated it consistently through the years that followed, including in Accenture’s Fiscal 2024 Annual Report, published in October 2024. Less than four months later, in February 2025, Sweet told employees in an internal memo that Accenture was ending several of its DEI-specific goals and programs, including its long-standing target of a gender-balanced global workforce by 2025 — a target the company had held since 2017. Around the same time, Accenture renamed its public-facing DEI webpage from “Our commitment to inclusion & diversity” to “Everyone is welcome here.” Accenture’s own framing of the shift was that the underlying commitment to a workplace where everyone belongs hadn’t changed, even as the specific representation targets and named programs built around it were retired. Critics saw it differently, pointing to the gap between the language used just months earlier and the programs that were subsequently wound down. Either way, the episode is a real-world test of how durable a CEO’s stated values turn out to be once external pressure – in this case, a broader US corporate retreat from DEI commitments through 2024 and 2025 – enters the picture.
