Sanctum: Gujral, a permanent rotating chamber dedicated to the works and evolving artistic resonance of Satish Gujral, was unveiled by RGAL | Raseel Gujral Art Legacy at Arzaani Atelier Privé, Bikaner House, New Delhi.
Satish Gujral’s celebrated Liberty Series explores freedom, identity, and human resilience
Conceived as an intimate sanctum at the heart of Arzaani, the space was envisioned not as a conventional gallery but as a dynamic cultural environment for art, dialogue and discovery. At its core, Sanctum: Gujral showcased a continually evolving rotation of original artworks, limited-edition prints, drawings, sculptures and select editions connected to the enduring creative language of Satish Gujral. The initiative established a permanent address where collectors, patrons, architects, designers and younger audiences could engage with the artist’s work beyond the temporary framework of exhibitions and art fairs.Designed as an immersive environment rather than a retail display, Sanctum invited visitors into an active experience of looking—one rooted in curiosity, materiality, memory and artistic exchange.Speaking on the occasion, Raseel Gujral Ansal said, “For my father, art was not meant for intellectual dissection or consumption. The work was complete once the form had found its integrity. Its purpose was not explanation, but to encounter an engagement with the viewer’s own sensibility and state of being. It simply invites the viewer to immerse, engage and absorb the work on their own terms, allowing meaning to arise through presence rather than instruction.“The chamber was announced as a year-round venue for rotating curatorial presentations, including thematic explorations of Gujral’s paintings, charcoals, sculptures and architectural sensibilities. The inaugural presentation featured works from Satish Gujral’s celebrated Liberty Series, one of the artist’s most evocative explorations of freedom, identity and human resilience. Created during a period of deep reflection in his practice, the series reflected Gujral’s ability to merge emotional intensity with architectural structure and symbolic form. Through layered compositions, textured surfaces and powerful figurative language, the works examined the idea of liberty not merely as a political condition but as a deeply personal and existential pursuit. The series continues to hold significance for its timeless relevance and its ability to speak across generations, embodying Gujral’s enduring engagement with memory, displacement and the human spirit. In addition to original works, Sanctum introduced a carefully developed series of museum-quality limited editions and artist folios, enabling a wider generation of collectors to participate in Gujral’s legacy while preserving the integrity and rarity of the original works.
