Trigger warning: This article contains sensitive information related to a missing person and an ongoing investigation into the matter, reader’s discretion is advised.New details have emerged regarding the ransom notes sent in connection with Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, revealing that one message allegedly contained an apology for her passing. The 84-year-old mother of ‘Today’ show co-host Savannah Guthrie vanished from her Tucson, Arizona home on February 1, and the investigation into her abduction has now stretched into its fifth month.According to sources close to the investigation who spoke to Air Mail in a report published Saturday, a ransom note that arrived on February 6 displayed a markedly different tone from earlier messages. The note was characterised as having a “new, less confident tone” compared to previous communications from the same Internet Protocol address.

Details of the ransom note from February 6

The message dated February 6 contained what sources described as a “sputtering and labored” apology regarding Nancy Guthrie’s death, which the writer suggested had occurred inadvertently. Beyond the apology, the note reportedly broached the possibility of returning the 84-year-old’s body in exchange for an unspecified monetary amount. This represented a significant shift from the earlier ransom demands. The initial message, which arrived within hours of Nancy’s disappearance being reported, demanded $4 million for her safe return. That note characterised Nancy Guthrie as feeling “safe but scared.” The sender subsequently increased the demand to $6 million if the funds were not received by February 9.However, conflicting reports have emerged regarding the content of these messages. TMZ confirmed Monday that a ransom note received on February 3 did not contain an apology or admission of passing, creating uncertainty about whether different outlets are referring to the same communication or separate notes.

Law enforcement’s response and investigative strategy

Rather than comply with the ransom demands, officials employed a tracking strategy in the early days of the investigation. They sent $152 to the Bitcoin address specified in the ransom note, hoping that the recipient would attempt to extract the money as cash, thereby creating an opportunity for law enforcement to trace the individual. The funds, however, remained untouched.Sources close to the investigation characterised this unsuccessful attempt to “tickle the wire” as a critical error during the early stages of the investigation, potentially missing an opportunity to identify the perpetrator.

Savannah Guthrie’s public response and pleas

Savannah Guthrie, along with her siblings Camron Guthrie and Annie Guthrie, took to Instagram to directly address the alleged abductor in multiple videos, pleading for their mother’s return. The family’s public strategy evolved as the investigation progressed.Following the February 6 message containing the apology, Savannah addressed the kidnapper directly. “We received your message and understand. We beg you now to return our mother to us, so that we can celebrate with her,” she said in one video, characterising the communication as “valuable” and offering to pay the demanded ransom.Later in February, Savannah issued another emotional plea, this time offering $1 million for Nancy Guthrie’s return. “We know that she may be lost. She may already be gone. And if this is what is to be, then we will accept it, but we need to know where she is. We need her to come home,” she said in the footage.

Savannah Guthrie’s public statements about the ransom notes

In her first interview discussing the family tragedy in March, Savannah spoke with co-host Hoda Kotb about the specific ransom notes her family had received. “I believe the two notes that we received that we responded to, I tend to believe those are real,” she stated at that time, suggesting that despite the conflicting details now emerging, she had assessed the authenticity of at least some of the communications.

Current status of the investigation

Savannah Guthrie returned to work at the ‘Today’ show’s Studio 1A in April, resuming her professional duties as the investigation into her mother’s disappearance continued without resolution. A suspect was captured in security camera footage from Nancy Guthrie’s residence on the night of her disappearance, but remains at large. The case, now in its fifth month, remains an active investigation with authorities continuing to pursue leads.Disclaimer: Figures presented in this article are derived from various public sources and are considered approximate unless explicitly noted.
