Man shot during Muharram procession in east Delhi over social media dispute

NEW DELHI: A man was shot at during a Muharram procession over a social media post in east Delhi’s Old Seemapuri area in the early hours of Friday. Two people, including a minor, have been detained in connection with the incident. The injured man has been identified as Irfan, a local resident, who had gone to participate in the procession near Monday Market in Old Seemapuri along with his friend around 1.30 am on Friday. According to police, the incident took place around 2.16 am when, during the procession, a man identified as Saleem allegedly signalled his associates by whistling. Soon after, Faizan (22) and another associate intercepted Irfan, and one of them allegedly pulled out a country-made pistol and fired two rounds before fleeing the spot. Police said Irfan was shot in the back of his shoulder and abdomen. During inquiry, it was revealed that the accused were known to him. “The reason was found to be an old enmity linked to a social media post,” said a senior police officer. Another officer added that the accused were also trying to build their image as local criminals. Based on Irfan’s complaint, an FIR was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act at Seemapuri police station. A police team analysed CCTV footage, carried out technical surveillance and conducted raids at multiple locations before arresting Faizan and detaining a juvenile involved in the case. Police recovered one country-made pistol and two live cartridges from the accused. Faizan, a resident of Ghaziabad, has previous criminal cases against him, police said, adding that efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the absconding co-accused.
