Launched to bridge the rural-urban digital divide, Project Ganga is UP’s flagship broadband initiative reaching over 20 lakh families across 21 districts in its initial phase, with a long-term goal to cover all 57,000 Gram Panchayats. It facilitaes setting up state-of-the-art digital libraries equipped with Wi-Fi, LED screens, and digital learning resources in Gram Panchayat Secretariats. Through this project, local youth and women are being trained as Digital Service Providers (DSPs) thus generating over 1 lakh jobs.Large-scale digitization of government services has reduced physical paperwork substantially with faster service delivery through online platforms.It helps increase transparency in welfare distribution, improved citizen access to certificates and government records. Digital transactions in Uttar Pradesh have increased dramatically over the past few years. State government data shows that digital transactions grew from around Rs 122 crore in 2017-18 to over Rs 1,024 crore during April–December 2024, reflecting the widespread adoption of UPI and other electronic payment systems.A major driver of digital payments in UP has been the DBT ecosystem. This has enhanced transparency and reportedly saved thousands of crores by eliminating intermediaries.The widespread acceptance of UPI has transformed payments across urban and rural Uttar Pradesh. Small shops, street vendors, transport services, and government agencies increasingly accept QR-code-based payments, making transactions faster and more convenient. UPI has become the dominant mode of digital payment in India and a major contributor to UP’s digital economy.Improved internet connectivity, smartphone penetration, banking correspondents, and financial literacy campaigns have encouraged citizens to shift from cash to digital modes of payment.Under the BC Sakhi programme, around 40,000 women are providing banking and digital financial services in rural areas. Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) is a governance mechanism through which government benefits, subsidies, pensions, scholarships, and welfare assistance are transferred directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts, eliminating intermediaries and reducing leakages.
