New Delhi: Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is set to operationalise a multilevel car parking facility at Bhikaji Cama Place District Centre in the next three months as part of its efforts to address parking shortages in major commercial hubs across the city.The project comes nearly four months after it opened a multilevel parking lot at Nehru Place with a capacity to accommodate over 660 vehicles.“The Bhikaji Cama facility is being developed to ease chronic parking congestion in one of Delhi’s busiest office and commercial districts. It will be able to accommodate 645 vehicles, and provide reserved parking spaces for persons with disabilities and eight adopted parking slots,” said an official.The complex will comprise a basement, ground floor, first floor, second floor and terrace level, enabling efficient utilisation of limited space while meeting growing parking demand in the district centre.To improve commuter convenience, it will include a range of public amenities, such as drinking water, a waiting room, toilet blocks, lifts and barrier-free access for differently abled visitors. Dedicated electric vehicle charging stations will be provided so that people can charge their cars after booking space in advance,” said the official.Two lifts will directly connect the parking lot with the raised plaza of Bhikaji Cama Place District Centre, allowing office-goers and visitors to access the commercial establishments without having to walk through traffic or surface parking areas.“The project is a conventional-type parking with reinforced cement concrete-framed structure. Two rainwater harvesting systems will ensure conservation of water and curb waterlogging.Most of its construction work has been completed. Workers are currently laying tiles in an open area around the main parking building, said the official.The agency implementing the project will be responsible for maintenance and operation of the lot for two years after completion.DDA will also develop 232 surface parking facilities this year in a relatively short time to provide immediate relief in high-demand areas. The proposed sites, details of which have been sent to Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) and Delhi govt, are spread across various DDA jurisdictions, including 98 locations in Dwarka, 53 in north zone, 30 in Rohini, 28 in east and 23 in south. DDA aims to operationalise at least 50 of these facilities by this Aug and the rest by Nov.“We have our sites ready, and selected agencies will be required to level and place tiles in parking areas to check air pollution, create proper entry and exit points and implement citizen-friendly parking fee collection systems,” the official said, adding that these lots will be able to accommodate nearly 72,000 vehicles.
