New Delhi: “We were crossing the road near Regal Building when someone came from behind and stabbed me with a sharp object. Before anyone could react, he disappeared back into the crowd,” alleged head constable Balram, who was injured in Wednesday’s violence near Jantar Mantar.Balram said the alleged incident took place around 8.40pm when he was heading from Parliament Street towards his deployment point. According to him, the man seemed 24-25 years old and wore a black T-shirt. “Whenever the crowd spotted policemen walking by, they would pounce on them and start beating them,” he alleged.Inspector Nand Kishore Singh said he was walking towards his deployment point at night when he encountered 150-200 people. “The moment they saw the uniform, they attacked me with sticks, stones and batons,” he alleged.Singh claimed the crowd shouted “Beat the policemen” and assaulted him with whatever objects they could find. “Many were wearing masks, with black cloth covering their faces, and they were carrying sticks and iron rods. They appeared to be well prepared.”His gold chain and wallet were allegedly snatched during the attack. Purported videos on social media show him running as he is surrounded by a group of agitators, who allegedly assaulted him repeatedly.ACP Vivek Bhagat said he rushed towards Park Hotel after receiving information that a head constable and an inspector had been surrounded and attacked. By the time his team reached, one of the injured officers was lying with blood streaming down his face, he said.“We managed to pull him barely a metre or two away, but the crowd was so large and violent they surrounded me as well,” he alleged, adding, “They pushed me against the railing, I somehow protected my head from serious injuries and got out.” He alleged cops were being singled out, isolated and attacked.According to Bhagat and his colleagues, he was assaulted with sticks, pointed stones and broken footpath tiles that had been sharpened into knife-like edges. The agitators allegedly targeted his face, breaking two of his teeth. After he fell to the ground, they continued kicking and punching him, they alleged.Bhagat was taken to RML Hospital with multiple bruises on his upper and lower limbs, including the shoulder, along with swelling at the back of his head. He was also bleeding from the ear and had episodes of vomiting. He sought discharge to continue treatment at AIIMS, where he was evaluated in the emergency department and discharged Thursday evening.ACP probationer Rohit Satwan, who was accompanying Bhagat, said the team had entered the crowd solely to rescue the trapped officers. “They started pelting bottles, stones and bricks at us. We went in to save our staff, but they turned on us as well,” he alleged. Satwan claimed he was hit with batons and stones too.Head constable Babu Lal, deployed near the Tolstoy Road signal, said the attack came without warning. “They suddenly grabbed me and started thrashing me. At one point, I felt death was very close,” he said. He suffered a fractured arm and a seven-inch head wound that required multiple stitches.
