New Delhi: A 36-year-old man who tried to kill his wife twice, blaming her for the death of their infant children, has been arrested after being in the run for a year.Sajid Ali, is from Mustafabad in Uttar Pradesh, married in 2015 and later shifted to Bindapur in southwest Delhi, police said. His parents are dead, and his brother is in jail.The couple suffered two tragedies when both their infants died shortly after birth. “Ali blamed his wife for the deaths and gradually slipped into alcohol and drug abuse. He also began demanding money from his wife to fuel his addiction, leading to fights,” special CP (crime) HGS Dhaliwal said.Ali also turned violent when she was unable to give him money. He attempted to kill her first in 2021 by attacking her with a knife. He was arrested and convicted and remained in jail for about three years before being released in Nov 2024.However, within months of his release, Ali allegedly attacked his wife again in 2025. Ali fled after that. Another case was registered at Dabri police station under Section 118 (voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt using dangerous weapons) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.“On Saturday, we got a tip-off regarding the whereabouts of the accused. Technical surveillance was mounted and his location was traced to Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh,” DCP (crime) Harsh Indora said.A team laid a trap near the labour chowk in Ikram Nagar, Ghaziabad. Ali, who had allegedly come to meet one of his associates, was identified by the team. On noticing the police, he attempted to flee. He was chased, overpowered and apprehended early Sunday.Ali was declared a proclaimed offender on June 2 in connection with the 2021 attempt-to-murder case. He was also wanted in the 2025 case. Police said he is facing non-bailable warrants in a separate 2019 case registered at Dabri police station under section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the IPC.
