New Delhi: Two women and a three-year-old girl had a narrow escape after a fire broke out at their residential building in west Delhi’s Rajouri Garden Sunday.The trio used sarees as a makeshift rope to climb down from the second-floor balcony to the first floor. The three-year-old girl, her paternal grandmother (60), and her mother (32) were trapped as smoke spread through the building.According to Delhi Fire Service (DFS), a call regarding the fire was received around 4.10 pm. Six fire tenders with around 35 fire personnel, led by Station Officer Batti Lal, were rushed to the spot.By the time firefighters reached the ground-plus-three-storey building, the family had already managed to escape. The blaze is suspected to have originated in an air conditioner. The fire reportedly spread rapidly because the AC pipeline ran through the building’s service shaft, where electric geysers had also been installed on each floor.Officials said the outdoor AC unit was separated by a plastic-sheet enclosure, and the shaft contained combustible items. The intense heat reportedly melted the copper wiring and rubber insulation of the outdoor unit.The fire then spread vertically through the service shaft, filling the floors with smoke. Officials said the blaze spread to the first, second and third floors, while the ground floor remained unaffected.Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 4.25 pm and completely extinguished it by 4.40 pm. No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.
