Matthew Lillard<\/a> believes nostalgia has played a major role in his recent Hollywood comeback. The actor, known for playing Shaggy in the live-action \u2018Scooby-Doo\u2019 films, said audiences and studios are looking back at earlier pop culture moments with fresh interest. Lillard said that renewed affection for the films has helped him get hired again, even as he joked that people do not necessarily like him as much as they miss the era he represents.<\/p>\n

During a recent appearance on the \u2018Phase Hero\u2019 podcast, Lillard spoke about the renewed popularity of \u2018Scooby-Doo\u2019 and \u2018Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed\u2019. \u201c\u2019Scooby-Doo\u2019 one and two are more popular now than they ever were when they came out. So I do think there\u2019s a weird nostalgia thing happening in our industry and in the zeitgeist because I think that people are longing for ye olde times,\u201d Lillard said.Lillard added that his link to that period has shaped his current career momentum. \u201cI think that\u2019s one of the reasons I\u2019m having this moment to be honest, is because I was identified in that moment, so people are hiring me again.\u201dLillard then laughed and said, \u201cI think that\u2019s why I\u2019m working. I don\u2019t think anyone really likes me. They just miss the old times.\u201dThe actor had earlier reflected on a difficult stretch in his career in a 2024 interview with Business Insider. After returning as Shaggy in \u2018Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed\u2019, Lillard said he expected the film to lift his career for years.<\/p>\n

Lillard told Business Insider that after \u2018Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed\u2019, he thought he would be \u201cNo. 1 on the call sheet for the next 10 years of movies.\u201d Instead, the film struggled at the box office and \u201cthe exact opposite happened.\u201dThe actor said that period forced him to rethink what he wanted from acting. \u201cI was caught up in the success of what I was doing, I was caught up in the parts I was getting, I was caught up in this drive to be quote-unquote famous,\u201d Lillard said.Lillard also admitted that his career had moved through uneven phases. \u201cI\u2019ve gone through good patches and bad patches. I\u2019ve been irrelevant and thought I was never going to work again.\u201dLillard\u2019s major return came in 2023, when he played William Afton in \u2018Five Nights at Freddy\u2019s\u2019. Since then, he has continued to book high-profile roles. His recent and upcoming projects include \u2018The Life of Chuck\u2019, \u2018Five Nights and Freddy\u2019s 2\u2019, \u2018Scream 7\u2019 and \u2018Daredevil: Born Again\u2019. He will also appear in Mike Flanagan\u2019s \u2018Carrie\u2019 TV series and star with Pedro Pascal, Will Arnett and Olivia Wilde in Tony Gilroy\u2019s \u2018Behemoth!\u2019.<\/div>\n
