<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\nA growing matchmaking industry in China is facing scrutiny over alleged \u201cflash marriage\u201d scams, with vulnerable men reportedly losing hundreds of thousands of yuan after being promised quick introductions to suitable brides.According to the BBC, China\u2019s \u201cflash marriage\u201d industry has grown rapidly amid a stark gender imbalance, with men in smaller cities and rural areas increasingly turning to matchmaking agencies that promise quick marriages. The publication reported that prosecutors handled cases involving 1,546 individuals linked to crimes in the matchmaking industry between January 2024 and March 2025, while authorities have launched a nationwide crackdown following growing public concern.One such case involves 37-year-old Wang Zhuang, who travelled to Guiyang in southwestern China after seeing glossy matchmaking advertisements promising to introduce men to \u201cdemure\u201d and devoted women. He believed the service could help him find a wife without spending years in relationships that might not lead to marriage.Instead, Wang says he was deceived about his eventual bride\u2019s past and was left facing financial losses, legal complications and an uncertain future.<\/p>\n According to Wang, matchmakers told him women from Guizhou were frugal, capable of running a household and willing to settle into family life. He travelled to Guiyang and met several prospective brides through the agency.He eventually chose one woman after meeting her four or five times, with each meeting lasting only eight to 10 minutes. He says the agency strictly controlled the interactions and warned the prospective couple against exchanging private contact details.Wang says he was looking for a woman who had never been married, had no children and was slightly younger than him. He believed the woman he selected matched those expectations.He eventually agreed to marry her and says he spent more than 300,000 yuan, or about $44,000, including the bride price. With wedding expenses and other costs, he estimates his total spending reached between 400,000 and 500,000 yuan.<\/p>\n Wang\u2019s marriage began to unravel within months. He says debt collectors started contacting him over money allegedly owed by his wife.After becoming suspicious, Wang checked her phone and discovered documents relating to her previous life, including her birth certificate and former marriage records.He claims he then learned that she had previously been married three times, had three children, had worked as a karaoke hostess and was dealing with significant debt. He also alleges that she had concealed her age and a sexually transmitted disease.Wang says his wife agreed to divorce but refused to return any of the money he had spent. When he returned to the matchmaking agency, he claims its offices had closed and the operators had disappeared.\u201cMy whole family has been thrown into chaos,\u201d Wang said, adding that he has struggled with insomnia and anxiety and has found it difficult to concentrate on work.<\/p>\n Wang\u2019s experience comes against the backdrop of a longstanding demographic problem in China.Decades of the country\u2019s one-child policy, combined with a strong preference for sons, contributed to a significant gender imbalance. Although China ended the one-child policy in 2016, its demographic consequences have continued to affect the marriage market.There are now around 30 million more men than women in China, creating particular difficulties for men living in smaller cities and rural areas.Wang says men in his hometown face high expectations when looking for a wife.\u201cThe requirements for men are very high in my city. You need to have a car, a house and your family should preferably run a business,\u201d he said.The traditional practice of paying a bride price has also become a major financial burden in areas where men significantly outnumber women.<\/p>\n This environment has helped fuel demand for matchmaking agencies promising rapid marriages.Some agencies promote what they describe as \u201cflash marriages\u201d, offering prospective clients the possibility of finding a spouse within days rather than spending years dating.One advertisement reportedly promises that \u201cthree days with the right introduction can beat three years of dating.\u201dGuiyang has emerged as a centre of this growing matchmaking market, with agencies attempting to connect women from Guizhou with men from other parts of China who may have greater financial resources but fewer potential partners locally.However, Chinese state media has warned that the rapid expansion of the industry has also created opportunities for illegal practices and fraud.Between January 2024 and March 2025, prosecutors handled cases involving 1,546 individuals accused of crimes connected to the matchmaking industry, according to the material.Authorities have also launched a nationwide crackdown following growing public concern.In one reported case, a matchmaking agency allegedly used karaoke waitresses to lure clients and defraud 128 victims of more than 2.5 million yuan.<\/p>\n Wang is not the only person who says he was caught up in the flash-marriage business.A 59-year-old man identified as Xu Rulin travelled to Guiyang with his son after paying nearly 500,000 yuan in an attempt to help him find a wife.Xu says his son married a woman only seven days after their first meeting. Following the marriage, he claims she demanded an iPhone, money for her business, and around 120,000 yuan for a wedding dress and jewellery.According to Xu, she left after living with the family for less than two weeks.The woman was later detained by police, and the couple eventually divorced, but Xu remained in Guiyang attempting to recover the family’s losses.<\/p>\n The allegations have also raised questions about how matchmaking companies verify information supplied by prospective brides and grooms.One agency manager acknowledged that his company did not conduct formal background checks on clients.Instead, he said local matchmakers introduced the women and were expected to know their family backgrounds because they often came from the same villages.The manager maintained that clients were entitled to refunds if information supplied by either side proved false.He also claimed that more than 90% of information provided by clients was truthful and argued that agencies involved in marriage fraud could face legal consequences.But for victims such as Wang, such assurances have offered little comfort.<\/p>\n Lawyers say prosecuting alleged marriage fraud can be complicated because Chinese law does not have a specific criminal offence covering this particular form of deception.Fan Binghe, from the Nanjing Office of Beijing Jingshi law firm, said victims generally have to establish that their spouse intended to take their money from the beginning.That can be difficult because defendants may argue that they genuinely intended to marry but later discovered that the relationship was incompatible.\u201cIn situations like that, the line becomes blurred,\u201d Fan said, noting that relationship disputes can be difficult to disprove.Recovering money from matchmaking agencies can be even harder when companies close or disappear after allegedly collecting large sums from clients.<\/p>\n Wang has spent much of his time documenting his experience on social media and warning other men about the risks of rushing into marriages arranged through matchmaking agencies.He has travelled to police offices and even gone to Beijing to call for stronger action against the practice.Although he has managed to recover some money, he says he has not received everything he lost.After the experience, Wang says he is no longer sure he wants to marry.\u201cAfter going through something like this, I don\u2019t even know if I can still get married,\u201d he said.For now, his life remains tied up in legal proceedings. More than a year after discovering the alleged deception, he says he is still waiting for his divorce to be resolved.\u201cI don\u2019t know when this will be resolved, so I can restart a normal life.
