In this fast-moving world, inspired by the ancient tradition of transforming wool into felt, including India\u2019s rich heritage of wool craftsmanship, NIFT Delhi graduate and textile artist Garima Goel<\/a> reimagines one of humanity\u2019s oldest textile materials through a contemporary artistic lens. Her handmade artworks, tactile tapestries, wearable pieces and objects explore the intersection of emotion, spirituality, transformation and material.Her practice reflects a broader shift within the contemporary art world, where textiles are increasingly recognised not merely as craft or function, but as a powerful medium for conversations about our own inner landscapes. At the centre of her artistic practice is a simple set of questions: What if an emotion could exist outside the body? What would it look and feel like? Can belonging have a colour? Can joy have a texture? Can courage take shape?For Garima, however, the journey began with something deeply personal\u2014the realisation that she wasn\u2019t giving herself enough time to understand what she was actually feeling. Working with wool gave her that time. It slowed her down enough to listen.\u201cIn a world where we are constantly connected to everything around us, yet increasingly disconnected from ourselves, I found myself searching for a slower way to understand my inner self and my feelings,\u201d she says. Although she had always dreamt of becoming an artist, years of studying and working with textiles gradually led her back to that childhood instinct\u2014not to create fashion alone, but to create art that could express what words often cannot. It became a practice of making the invisible visible by translating emotion, energy and inner experience into something that could be seen, touched and felt.Rather than illustrating emotions literally, Garima lets each feeling shape the making process. Layers of wool, embroidery, colour and organic forms gradually become a physical language for experiences that are often difficult to articulate. What began as a personal search evolved into Emot, a contemporary textile art studio that approaches wool not simply as a textile, but as a medium for expressing emotion.Garima finds wool central to this language because the material has a very human quality. \u201cWool is warm, soft and imperfect. There is something deeply human about that imperfection, and it allows me to explore emotions in a very tactile way,\u201d she says. Through natural wool fibres, colour, texture and slow handmade processes, Garima transforms emotions into tactile artworks that invite viewers to pause, reflect and reconnect with themselves.The slow, tactile process of creating each artwork became more than a technique; it became a form of meditation, creating space not only to make, but also to pause, feel and turn inward. In a culture increasingly defined by speed, screens and constant movement, this deliberate pace offers something rare: an invitation to slow down and reconnect with oneself.\u201cWorking with wool taught me that making something slowly can also be a way of listening to yourself,\u201d Garima says. \u201cThe process gives emotions the time and space to reveal themselves.\u201d Up close, her works reveal layers of fibres, embroidery, texture, beads and colour. From a distance, they resemble abstract landscapes or imagined terrains. Each viewer encounters them differently. A colour may evoke a childhood memory for one person, while a particular texture may feel comforting or unsettling to another.Garima does not seek to tell viewers what to feel. Instead, she creates the conditions for feeling to happen. Every Emot artwork begins with an emotion and ends with an invitation\u2014for someone else to pause, connect and perhaps recognise a part of themselves within the work. Garima\u2019s practice has already begun receiving recognition within the textile and design community. She was recently invited to exhibit her work at the Australian High Commission in New Delhi as part of The Merino Circle by The Woolmark Company, the global authority on wool, exhibiting alongside leading designers working with the material. The presentation placed Emot within a new generation of contemporary textile practices that are redefining how wool can be experienced\u2014not only as a material for design, but as a medium for artistic expression.Emot has a curated collection of contemporary handmade artworks, tactile tapestries, wearable pieces, jewellery and collectible objects. Rooted in the same philosophy, each piece is thoughtfully crafted to bring warmth, texture and emotional resonance into everyday life.<\/div>\n
