She did not have access to a proper gymnasium. She did not have imported equipment or trained coaches or the kind of infrastructure that produces Olympic athletes. What she had was a makeshift vault built from discarded scooter parts and springs, a coach who believed in her, and a stubbornness that would eventually make history. That girl was Dipa Karmakar<\/a>. And she went on to become India’s first female Olympic gymnast the first Indian female gymnast to compete at the Olympics at the 2016 Rio Games, ending a 52-year wait for India in artistic gymnastics at the Games.<\/p>\n The flat feet that were supposed to stop her<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/p>\n 13 Jul 2026 | 13:11<\/p>\n Before the medals, before the records, before Rio, there was rejection. Dipa was told she could never become a gymnast because of her flat feet. The Sports Authority of India turned her away. Flat feet, in gymnastics, are considered a serious physical disadvantage; they affect balance, spring, and landing in ways that coaches and selectors consider disqualifying. But Dipa’s coach Bishweshwar Nandi saw something they did not. He worked with her for years patiently, persistently addressing the physical limitation through specific exercises and training methods while simultaneously developing one of the most technically fearless gymnasts India had ever produced. From being rejected to training on a scooter-parts vault to winning national titles by the age of 14, Dipa’s early journey is a masterclass in refusing to accept someone else’s definition of your limitations.<\/p>\n At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Dipa Karmakar did not just compete. She performed the Produnova vault, one of the most dangerous and technically demanding moves in gymnastics, a vault so difficult that only five women in the world have ever landed it successfully. She placed fourth with a score of 15.066, missing the bronze medal by just 0.15 points. 0.15 points. The width of a fingernail between Dipa Karmakar and an Olympic medal. She did not win that medal. But what she won was something larger. She brought gymnastics into the consciousness of an entire nation. She made millions of Indian children look at a sport they had never considered and think if she can do this, maybe I can too. “I never expected a medal from these Olympics, but to have come fourth is very creditable,” she said after the event. “I don’t need to be disappointed.”<\/p>\n After Rio, Dipa faced injuries that would have ended the careers of less determined athletes. Multiple knee injuries. Multiple surgeries. Long recoveries. Years of uncertainty. She came back every time. At the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup 2018 in Mersin, Turkey, she won gold in the vault event, becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal at an international gymnastics event. She was also the first female Indian gymnast to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games, claiming bronze at the 2014 Games in Glasgow. She was honoured with the Padma Shri<\/a>, the Arjuna Award, and the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, the country’s highest sports honour.And then in October 2024, at the age of 31, after 25 years of giving everything she had to the sport, Dipa Karmakar announced her retirement. “After a lot of thinking, I have made the decision to retire from gymnastics,” she wrote. “This decision was not easy for me, but it feels like the right time.”<\/p>\n What she leaves behind<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n “Today, seeing that little Dipa makes me very happy because she had the courage to dream,” she said while reflecting on her career. That little girl, born with flat feet in a small city in Tripura, trained on a vault made from scooter parts, was rejected and then unstoppably changed what Indian girls believed was possible for them in sports. Some athletes win medals. Others change the future of an entire sport. Dipa Karmakar did both. She did not just break a barrier.
