<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\nNew Delhi: Dermatologists are warning of an emerging side effect linked to the growing use of GLP-1 weight-loss medicines: excessive hair loss.Doctors say they are seeing a growing number of patients complaining of sudden hair fall after rapid weight loss on these medications, with many having started the injections without medical supervision after being influenced by social media.According to dermatologist Dr Gaurav Garg, medical director of Dermalife Skin and Hair Clinic, around 40% of GLP-1 users visiting his clinics report mild to significant hair loss, often noticing hair falling out in clumps while washing or combing.\u201cThe medication itself is usually not damaging the hair. The real culprit is rapid weight loss, nutritional deficiencies and the metabolic shock experienced by the body,\u201d he said, adding that many patients are obtaining the drugs over the counter or using them without specialist guidance.The condition is not a recognised medical diagnosis but is usually telogen effluvium, a temporary form of stress-induced hair loss that may appear three to four months after rapid weight loss. Reduced food intake during treatment can also lead to deficiencies of protein, iron, zinc and biotin, all of which are essential for healthy hair growth.The warning comes as GLP-1 medicines witness a surge in demand in India, fuelled by their dramatic weight-loss effects and growing popularity on social media. Doctors say increasing cosmetic use and self-medication are contributing to the problem.Emerging research suggests the problem may be more common than previously recognised. A study, Prevalence and Predictors of Hair Shedding among GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Users: A Cross-Sectional Study from Saudi Arabia, published in the peer-reviewed journal Skin Appendage Disorders, surveyed 152 current and former GLP-1 receptor agonist users and found that 70.4% reported hair shedding after starting treatment.The prevalence was highest among users of tirzepatide (76.7%), followed by semaglutide (64%), and was significantly more common in women and those who had lost 15% or more of their body weight. Nearly 40% of the affected participants discontinued treatment because of hair loss while over one-third of them reported that the condition resolved after stopping the medication.Dr Ramanjeet Singh, director of the dermatology department at Medanta Hospital, said many patients were starting the drugs without specialist evaluation or using higher-than-recommended doses in pursuit of faster weight loss.\u201cHair loss is usually temporary and reversible, but it reflects rapid metabolic changes and nutritional deficiencies rather than permanent damage to the hair follicles. Most patients recover with balanced nutrition, correction of deficiencies and medically supervised weight management,\u201d he said.Experts say hair follicles are highly sensitive to nutritional stress. Rapid calorie restriction prompts the body to prioritise vital organs over hair growth, pushing more follicles into the shedding phase. Doctors advise people considering GLP-1 medicines to use them only under medical supervision, avoid crash dieting, maintain adequate protein intake and seek medical advice if excessive hair loss develops. They stress that these are prescription medicines for obesity and diabetes, not cosmetic weight-loss products.<\/div>\n
