The women’s T54 1500m wheelchair final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games will be rerun after para-athletics officials upheld a series of appeals following a dramatic first-lap crash that left multiple athletes overturned, changed the medal positions and overshadowed what had initially appeared to be a record-breaking victory for Scotland’s Melanie Woods.The extraordinary decision means Woods, England’s Ellis Kottas and Australia’s Mikaela Dingley, who had originally been awarded gold, silver and bronze respectively, must race again despite believing they had already secured their places in Commonwealth Games history.<\/p>\n

Chaotic opening lap triggers chain reaction<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

The initial collision quickly escalated into a chain reaction involving several other competitors.Australia’s Eliza Ault-Connell, who had also been impeded by the incident, was knocked from her wheelchair moments later.Scotland’s Joanna Robertson then lost control and skidded across the Mondo track balancing on a single wheel, while England’s Ellis Kottas crashed into the outside barrier as the incident unfolded around her.Despite the series of crashes, race officials allowed the event to continue.While several athletes struggled behind the leaders, Woods had avoided the chaos altogether after making a fast start and continued to build a commanding advantage. <\/p>\n

The Scot crossed the finish line in a Commonwealth Games record of 3 minutes 33.39 <\/span>seconds<\/span>, breaking the previous Games record of 3:36.97, <\/span>set by Canada’s Diane Roy at Gold Coast 2018 by more than three seconds. The mark remains behind the world record of 3:02.26,<\/span> set by Switzerland’s Catherine Debrunner in 2025.<\/p>\n

Initial result changed after disqualification<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Sharma originally crossed the line in second place behind Woods.However, officials later disqualified the Canadian for causing the opening-lap collision.That decision promoted Kottas to the silver medal position and elevated Australia’s Mikaela Dingley to bronze.The three medallists completed a lap of honour, posed for photographs and left the venue believing the competition had concluded.However, because the medal ceremony had been scheduled for Thursday rather than immediately after the race, no medals had yet been formally presented.<\/p>\n

Appeals lead to unprecedented rerun<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

The drama continued long after the finish. Australia and Mauritius both lodged appeals following the incident, while Canada submitted its own appeal challenging Sharma’s disqualification.Canada’s appeal against Sharma’s disqualification was ultimately rejected.However, after considering the wider circumstances surrounding the race, the para-athletics Jury of Appeal ruled that the event itself should be rerun.The decision was made by para-athletics authorities rather than Glasgow 2026 organisers.As a result, the final has been rescheduled for 10:24am on Friday, more than 39 hours after the original race began.Six of the seven original competitors will be eligible to start again.Sharma’s disqualification, however, remains in place, meaning she will not participate in the rerun.<\/p>\n

Athletes react to controversial decision<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Kottas accepted the ruling despite admitting she would rather not race again.In a post on Instagram, the England athlete wrote:“While I really don’t want to rerun the race (lowkey traumatised) if I’m going to medal I want to do so on my own merit, so I will go out and give it all I’ve got.“If I don’t medal, so be it. I’ll still have the incredible memories of lifting that England flag.”Team England, however, criticised the decision.According to The Guardian, Team England chef de mission Jonny Riall said the delegation was “incredibly disappointed” by the ruling.“While there is no formal protest process available to us, we have strongly challenged the decision,” Riall said.“The race officials did not halt the race at the time of the incident, nor was any immediate decision made to declare the race void or order a rerun.“Ellis and the team therefore proceeded on the understanding that all competition procedures had been completed and the result confirmed.”He added that England had no formal avenue through which to protest the Jury of Appeal’s decision.Team Scotland responded more cautiously.“We note the decision of the Jury of Appeal regarding the Women’s T54 1500m final,” the organisation said in a statement.“Melanie Woods and Joanna Robertson will now prepare to compete again on Friday in the rerun.”<\/p>\n

Woods now faces demanding schedule<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

The decision leaves Woods with a demanding programme on Friday.The 31-year-old, who has used a wheelchair since being struck by a car while cycling in 2018, must first defend the Commonwealth title she believed she had already won before quickly turning her attention to another event.She is also scheduled to compete in the women’s T54 400m, with the heats beginning little more than 90 minutes after the rerun of the 1500m final.Instead of celebrating a home Commonwealth Games gold medal and a Games record, Woods must now attempt to repeat both performances under unprecedented circumstances.The rerun brings one of the most remarkable episodes of Glasgow 2026 to an unusual conclusion, with a race that featured multiple crashes, a disqualification, three separate appeals and an overturned result set to be decided all over again nearly two days after it first took place.<\/div>\n
