The mission, called Aagaman (Sanskrit for &#8220;arrival&#8221;), was the maiden flight of Vikram-1, India&#8217;s first privately developed orbital-class launch vehicle.<!-- --> <span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"7\"\/>With this launch, India became the third country in the world, after the United States and China, to have private orbital launch capability. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Skyroot Aerospace on the achievement, and IN-SPACe chairman Pawan Goenka called it &#8220;an India moment.&#8221;<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"9\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2 style=\"line-height:1.38;margin-top:18pt;margin-bottom:6pt;\">Breaking it down<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"11\"\/>Until recently, only government agencies like ISRO could design, build and launch orbital rockets in India. Vikram-1 changes this. <!-- -->It is a rocket built entirely by a private Indian company, Skyroot Aerospace, from design to manufacturing to final assembly. The rocket is named after Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, considered the father of India&#8217;s space programme.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"16\"\/>Think of it like this: ISRO&#8217;s PSLV and GSLV are like government-run trains that carry satellites into space on fixed schedules. Vikram-1 is Skyroot&#8217;s attempt to offer a &#8220;cab&#8221; service instead, a smaller, faster, on-demand ride for small satellites that need to reach specific, customised orbits quickly.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"19\"\/>Vikram-1 is not India&#8217;s first private rocket. That distinction belongs to Vikram-S, a smaller, single-stage suborbital rocket launched by Skyroot in November 2022 under Mission Prarambh. Vikram-1 goes a step further. It is a full orbital vehicle, meaning it can carry a satellite all the way into Earth orbit rather than just touching the edge of space and coming back down.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"21\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2 style=\"line-height:1.38;margin-top:18pt;margin-bottom:6pt;\">The mechanism<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"23\"\/>Vikram-1 is a four-stage rocket, roughly 20-24 metres tall, built mostly from carbon-composite materials to keep it light. Its stages are:<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"25\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"cdatainfo modify_cdata_list_style id-r-component \" data-pos=\"26\">\n<ol>\n<li>Three solid-fuel stages, named Kalam-1200, Kalam-250 and Kalam-100 after former President and rocket scientist Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. These provide the initial thrust to climb out of the atmosphere.<\/li>\n<li>A liquid-fuelled Orbital Adjustment Module (OAM), the final stage, which uses a 3D-printed engine. Unlike solid stages that fire once, the OAM can start, stop and restart in space, allowing precise, last-mile placement of satellites into their target orbit.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"27\"\/>The rocket is designed to carry payloads of up to 350 kg to a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) of about 450 km. <!-- -->On its debut flight, it carried technology demonstration payloads from companies such as Grahaa Space, Cosmoserve Space and Germany&#8217;s DCUBED, along with symbolic cargo including a handwritten postcard from PM Modi and a lab-grown diamond artwork.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"31\"\/>Aagaman was described as a test flight, the first of three planned development flights meant to validate the rocket before Skyroot begins regular commercial launches.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"34\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2 style=\"line-height:1.38;margin-top:18pt;margin-bottom:6pt;\">Relevant bodies, laws and policies<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"36\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"cdatainfo modify_cdata_list_style id-r-component \" data-pos=\"37\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation): <\/strong>India&#8217;s national space agency.
