Such students will now be barred from applying for undergraduate medical and dental courses in Maharashtra for the next two academic years.<\/p>\n The Medical Education and Drugs Department notified the revised admission rules on Thursday. Under the new framework, every undergraduate medical and dental seat\u2014including those available in stray vacancy rounds\u2014will be filled only through the State Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell’s Common Admission Process.Earlier, seats that remained vacant after the CAP rounds were handed over to private colleges, which conducted their own institutional rounds before the admission deadline. Those rounds often became a source of controversy, with allegations of non-transparent allotments and high fee demands. With the latest decision, that practice has come to an end.<\/p>\n The responsibility of filling seats will now remain with the CET Cell until the admission cut-off date. Officials said that if seats remain vacant even after all CAP rounds are completed, they will simply remain unfilled. Colleges will no longer be allowed to conduct a separate admission process after the centralised counselling ends.According to officials, the change is expected to ensure that colleges make every effort to fill seats during the official counselling process instead of waiting for institutional rounds.<\/p>\n The government has also taken aim at seat blocking, a recurring issue during medical admissions. Under the revised rules, candidates who receive a seat in the final round of counselling but fail to join will not be eligible to seek undergraduate medical or dental admission in Maharashtra for the next two academic sessions.Officials believe the provision will discourage students from holding on to seats while hoping to secure a preferred college through institutional rounds, an option that will no longer exist.The expectation is that students will make more considered choices during counselling, reducing the number of seats that go vacant at the end of the admission process.<\/p>\n The latest reforms do not alter the existing “free exit” policy after the first round of CAP counselling. Candidates can still withdraw after the first round without facing any penalty.
