Centuries-long tradition contributes to an evolving memory of the fast day through \u201c<span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myjewishlearning.com\/article\/kinot-for-tisha-bav\/\">kinot<\/a><\/span>,\u201d the liturgical poems recited in synagogues that mourn the destruction of Jerusalem while also <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alephbeta.org\/tisha-bav\/kinot\">commemorating later tragedies<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Over centuries, rabbis and poets have <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chabad.org\/library\/article_cdo\/aid\/6540905\/jewish\/What-Are-Kinot.htm\">composed new kinot<\/a><\/span> in response to catastrophes and persecutions, from the <span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/en\/tisha_bav_evolution\/\">Crusades and Inquisition <\/a><\/span>to the <span><a href=\"https:\/\/mizrachi.org\/hamizrachi\/the-tisha-bav-kinot-and-october-7\/\">Holocaust<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attacks on Israel and the devastating war in Gaza, <span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.timesofisrael.com\/o-how-she-sat-alone-new-laments-for-a-beloved-land\/\">new lamentations<\/a><\/span> have continued that tradition as <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/j-spot\/article-814093\">modern authors<\/a><\/span> started penning liturgical poems.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4269660\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 240px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4269660 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/webRNS-Tisha-BAv01-240x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/webRNS-Tisha-BAv01-240x240.jpg 240w, https:\/\/religionnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/webRNS-Tisha-BAv01-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text edd-enabled\"><span class=\"caption\">Rabbi Diana Fersko (Photo courtesy of Rabbi Diana Fersko)<\/span><span class=\"credit\"\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIn 2026, Tisha B\u2019Av looks a lot like it\u2019s always looked,\u201d Rabbi Diana Fersko, chief Jewish life officer at the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan, told RNS. \u201cIt\u2019s this day of sadness where you\u2019re letting yourself sit in that emotion and reflect on some of the darkest moments in Jewish history. You\u2019re doing it with your community, learning, reflecting, praying and contemplating the cosmic journey that we\u2019ve been on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlike many Jewish holidays that emphasize celebration, family gatherings or festive meals, Tisha B\u2019Av calls for an embrace of grief for 25 hours. Throughout that time, mourners fast, avoid physical comforts \u2014 like foregoing regular chairs for low stools \u2014 and gather in synagogues to read the biblical <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chabad.org\/library\/bible_cdo\/aid\/16457\/jewish\/Chapter-1.htm\">Book of Lamentations<\/a><\/span>, alongside the kinot.<\/p>\n<p>Fersko said the tradition of adding new kinot to respond to times of crises demonstrates that Jewish mourning has never been frozen in time.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<hr\/>\n<p>After Oct. 7, new liturgical works appeared almost immediately. \u201cKinat Be\u2019eri,\u201d written by Israeli poet Yagel Haroush to mourn the massacre at the Be\u2019eri <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/10\/07\/g-s1-25787\/israel-october-7-kibbutz-beeri-hamas-attack-anniversary\">kibbutz<\/a><\/span> in southern Israel, quickly became popular. The poem notably starts each stanza with \u201cEicha\u201d \u2014 the Hebrew word for the question \u201chow?\u201d \u2014 alluding to the Book of Lamentations and wrestling with God amid mass deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Yaacov Osadon is a \u201cpaytan,\u201d or Jewish liturgical singer, from Dimona, Israel, who has spent a decade studying traditional Moroccan Jewish hymns and \u201cpiyyutim,\u201d Jewish liturgical poems and hymns chanted during religious services, in his Sephardic tradition. He said diverse Jewish communities across the diaspora and Israel have always sought to grieve as a people after defining moments of loss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe purpose is not only to preserve their memory, but also to examine circumstances that led to these tragedies, learn from them and pray that such suffering will never happen again,\u201d said Osadon, whose day job is operations manager at Yatir Winery, a kosher fine wine producer near Dimona.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4269663\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 240px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4269663 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/webRNS-Tisha-BAv02-e1784745024407-240x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/webRNS-Tisha-BAv02-e1784745024407-240x240.jpg 240w, https:\/\/religionnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/webRNS-Tisha-BAv02-e1784745024407-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text edd-enabled\"><span class=\"caption\">Rabbi Or Rose leads prayer at a multifaith gathering at the Washington National Cathedral in 2025. (Photo courtesy of Rabbi Or Rose)<\/span><span class=\"credit\"\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Rabbi Or Rose, director of the Betty Ann Greenbaum Miller Center for Interreligious Learning and Leadership at Hebrew College in Newton, Massachusetts, said this sense of evolving memory reflects the enduring purpose of the holiday itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTisha B\u2019Av is about how we carry loss now, and how memory can become a stimulus for moral and spiritual introspection and renewal,\u201d Rose said.<\/p>\n<p>This year, he said, the holiday arrives as many Jews continue to process multiple crises in what Rose described as \u201ca world that feels especially fragile and unsettled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rose continued, \u201cThe liturgy of Tisha B\u2019Av is intentionally spare and somber. The traditional physical practices of the day \u2014 fasting, sitting low, refraining from comfort, and observing a kind of communal austerity \u2014 help make the mourning feel embodied, and not just intellectual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New liturgical poems do not replace ancient laments, Fersko said, but rather place more recent suffering \u2014 and prayers for restoration \u2014 within the longer arc of Jewish history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOctober 7 will definitely be in my mind, but Tisha B\u2019Av also gives you the long view of Jewish history,\u201d Fersko said. \u201cAs long as it\u2019s done with thought, care and sincerity, it makes sense to bring modern pain points into this very sad day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Osadon, the lessons of Tisha B\u2019Av extend beyond remembrance. Jewish tradition, he pointed out, teaches that the Second Temple was destroyed because of \u201csinat chinam,\u201d or baseless hatred, and destructive internal division among Jews. In today\u2019s sharply polarized Israeli society, he believes that message carries particular urgency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHistory should not only be remembered \u2014 it should also be learned from,\u201d he said. \u201cWe should make every possible effort to strengthen mutual respect, preserve our unity despite our differences and ensure that disagreement never turns into hostility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rose echoed that teaching, pointing to the late Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook\u2019s call for \u201c<span><a href=\"https:\/\/ravkooktorah.org\/tisha-av-70\">ahavat chinam<\/a><\/span>,\u201d or baseless love, as an antidote to repair a broken world.\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<hr\/>\n<p>The Jewish tradition, Rose said, \u201cdoes not let us only point outward at the world\u2019s cruelty; it also asks us to examine our own moral failings, our communal divisions and the ways hatred can corrode our life together,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>One teaching predicts the coming <span><a href=\"https:\/\/stateofformation.org\/2014\/08\/born-on-the-9th-of-av-misery-and-messianism\/\">Messiah will be born on Tisha B\u2019Av,<\/a><\/span> suggesting that redemption will emerge only after catastrophe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTisha B\u2019Av teaches us that Jewish hope is not naive optimism,\u201d Rose said. \u201cIt is hope forged in the presence of loss.
