Dhubri: Assam CM’s vigilance cell has registered a case into the alleged embezzlement of several crores of rupees from the Dhubri zila parishad between 2021 and 2025.A team of vigilance officials arrived in Dhubri on Tuesday evening and has since been examining official records, scrutinising financial documents and questioning officials and employees suspected of involvement in the alleged irregularities \u2014 including the misuse of MGNREGA<\/a> funds, which were reportedly siphoned off without any work being executed on the ground.The investigation follows allegations that contractors were forced to pay illegal commissions before their project bills were processed or released.It has also been alleged that development funds were manipulated through irregular financial approvals and administrative procedures, enabling large-scale diversion of public money.Complaints further point to the misuse of zila parishad funds, including Own Source Revenue (OSR), and irregular maintenance of financial records, resulting in suspected misappropriation running into several crores of rupees.A source in the Dhubri Zila Parishad said that in July 2023, the then chief executive officer Biswajit Goswami and Assistant District Programme Manager Mrinal Kanti Sarkar were arrested by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption in a trap case for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe to clear development-related works.During the investigation, vigilance officials recovered more than \u20b92 crore in cash.The vigilance cell is continuing its probe to ascertain the full extent of the alleged scam and identify all those involved. More officials are likely to be questioned as the investigation progresses.Senior officials have remained tight-lipped, but some confirmed that the CM’s vigilance team is investigating multiple points of financial irregularities and fund embezzlement in the Dhubri Zila Parishad.<\/p>\n
