The families were sharing about the intense levels of fear their community has been experiencing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is completely terrible, and we cannot be silent in front of this,\u201d the Rev. Mattia Ferrari, coordinator of World Meeting of Popular Movements, told RNS about the killing of Salgado Araujo.<\/p>\n<p>On his multi-city tour of the U.S., Ferrari has heard from many immigrants experiencing fear, family separation and even detention. \u201cThey are suffering something that is completely unfair, completely unjust,\u201d Ferrari said, calling Salgado Araujo\u2019s death \u201cthe top of the sufferings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The World Meeting of Popular Movements was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iG3vqM6nCyE\">first convened<\/a> at the Vatican with Pope Francis in 2014, and since then the Vatican\u2019s Dicastery for Integral Human Development has \u201caccompanied\u201d the initiative, which emphasizes poor and marginalized people as \u201cprotagonists\u201d in the fight for justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u200aWe are here to serve, not to lead,\u201d said Ferrari of the church\u2019s role, highlighting grassroots leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Last fall, Pope Leo XIV <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/en\/speeches\/2025\/october\/documents\/20251023-movimenti-popolari.html\">told<\/a> the convening, which has historically called for land, housing and work for poor people, \u201cThe Church must be with you: a poor Church for the poor, a Church that reaches out, a Church that takes risks, a Church that is courageous, prophetic and joyful!\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4268130\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 750px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4268130\" src=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/webRNS-Ferrari-Tour1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/webRNS-Ferrari-Tour1.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/religionnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/webRNS-Ferrari-Tour1-427x320.jpg 427w, https:\/\/religionnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/webRNS-Ferrari-Tour1-807x605.jpg 807w, https:\/\/religionnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/webRNS-Ferrari-Tour1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/religionnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/webRNS-Ferrari-Tour1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/religionnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/webRNS-Ferrari-Tour1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/religionnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/webRNS-Ferrari-Tour1-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text edd-enabled\"><span class=\"caption\">The Rev. (Photo courtesy of Catholics in Communion)<\/span><span class=\"credit\"\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Leo also emphasized that the poor are at the center of the gospel. \u201cTherefore, marginalized communities\u2026must be involved in a collective and united effort aimed at reversing the dehumanizing trend of social injustices and promoting integral human development,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ferrari\u2019s tour was planned after Ferrari expressed \u201ccuriosity\u201d at last fall\u2019s convening to see and hear from people on the ground who are confronting the \u201ccost of living and immigration tension\u201d in the U.S., said Cecilia Flores, who coordinated the tour in her volunteer role with a coalition called Catholics in Communion, which was founded late last year to respond to the \u201cpastoral emergency\u201d of mass deportations.<\/p>\n<p>Ferrari is now halfway through a nearly six-week tour to 21 cities and regions across California, Washington state, Texas, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Indiana, Michigan, Louisiana, Washington, D.C., New Jersey and New York, carrying the Catholic church\u2019s message of support to faith-based community organizing groups throughout the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>He and his fellow delegation members \u200a\u201csit and listen and ask just such deep questions, but in such a gentle and pastoral and loving way,\u201d said Flores.<\/p>\n<p>Ferrari is traveling with Luca Casarini, the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/mediterranearescue.org\/en\/about-us\">Mediterranea Saving Humans<\/a>, which has reacted to the deaths of thousands of migrants crossing the Mediterranean by crewing a ship for sea rescues. Ferrari is the group\u2019s chaplain. (Photo courtesy of Catholics in Communion)<\/span><span class=\"credit\"\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr\/>\n<hr\/>\n<p>The third member of the delegation for the U.S. tour is C\u00e9sar Piscoya, an adviser to the Latin American bishops\u2019 conference\u2019s (CELAM) Center for Pastoral Action Programs and Networks. Piscoya, a lay theologian and <a href=\"https:\/\/jesuitas.bo\/noticias\/cesar-piscoya-y-su-cercania-con-el-papa-leon-xiv-un-vinculo-de-amistad-y-servicio-en-la-mision-pastoral\">longtime friend<\/a> of Leo\u2019s, was a missionary with the Augustinians, Leo\u2019s order, and then worked with then-Bishop Robert Prevost when he led the Diocese of Chiclayo, Peru.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u200aSomething they keep saying is, they\u2019ve seen a suffering they didn\u2019t really know existed in the United States,\u201d said Flores, who is the executive director of the Catholic Volunteer Network when she isn\u2019t volunteering with Catholics in Communion. \u201c\u200aA lot of people share that the image that they have learned of the U.S., whether that\u2019s through media or how they were told growing up, they get here and they see it\u2019s really not as easy as people might think it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the delegation is also seeing \u201c\u200aa church that is uniting to take care of one another and to embody what it means to be the body of Christ, to move in defense of the dignity of each person on this earth and in this country,\u201d said Flores.<\/p>\n<p>Across the U.S., immigration has been a core focus of the trip. \u201c\u200aThis is a matter of love, a matter of human dignity, a matter of the gospel. Because what these people are suffering \u2014 this pain \u2014 is also our pain because we are brothers and sisters,\u201d said Ferrari.<\/p>\n<p>But immigration has not been the only issue raised by the tour. (Photo courtesy of LA Voice)<\/span><span class=\"credit\"\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Emily, a 21-year-old college student studying civil engineering who asked to be identified by her first name because she does not have legal immigration status, said if she had not already enrolled in university, fear of sharing her information would have prevented her from studying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI fear that I might just be studying in class, and because universities are public spaces, they could just come in and unfortunately just get us,\u201d she told RNS.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Testifying to that experience publicly for the first time at the parish she has attended since she arrived from Mexico as a baby was \u201cvulnerable\u201d but empowering, she said. \u201cI just felt so much better, so much, for me to know there were more people (experiencing this) and that the church actually cared about us,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Hoo, the lead organizer for One LA, said that the impact is widespread. \u201c\u200aIt\u2019s recognizing that the Vatican is watching, that the world is watching, that their stories are important not just to themselves and their communities, but that everybody is aware about the injustices that are happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortencia Ramirez, a One LA leader who co-chaired the hearing, fought to hold back tears at hearing the experiences of her community. But she too felt hope because of the connection to Leo. \u201cWe asked them to take what they observed with the IAF back to the pope, and they agreed that they would,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The delegation also participated in a panel of organizers hosted at Dolores Mission, an organizing base for another interfaith group working on immigration, LA Voice, part of the Faith in Action network. Angel Mortel, a lead organizer for the group, said they shared about their efforts to pass California bills imposing high taxes on private immigration detention companies and remove state financial benefits from companies involved in or investing in detention.<\/p>\n<p>For Mortel, the collaboration between LA Voice, One LA and the archdiocese of LA to plan the trip also brought hope for the future. \u201c\u200aThis was the first time in my eight years with LA Voice that we\u2019ve done something together,\u201d she said. \u201c\u200aWithout that collaboration, it\u2019s just too big a task to take on \u2014 to take on the forces that are coming down on us,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Flores said that connections, resource-sharing and opportunities for formation will be some of the long-lasting impacts of Ferrari\u2019s tour, especially because of the presence of Piscoya, a representative of the Latin American bishops\u2019 conference.<\/p>\n<p>In the majority of cities, Ferrari also met with the local Catholic bishop, and in the few cities where the bishop was unavailable, a staff member.<\/p>\n<p>In Houston, Elizabeth Valdez, director of the IAF in Texas, said that Ferrari and his team were impressed by the key roles that clergy play in forming lay people to be leaders in organizing. \u201c\u200aThey had not seen or experienced that anywhere before, even in the visits that they\u2019ve done in other parts of the country,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>But even visiting 21 different cities and regions, Ferrari regretted the parts of the U.S. that he and his delegation were unable to visit. \u201c\u200aWe have so much work to do worldwide, so we will be back surely,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- CONTENT END 1 -->\n        <\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2026\/07\/13\/vatican-backed-priest-tours-u-s-to-visit-immigrant-advocates-community-organizers\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(RNS) \u2014 When the news broke that Lorenzo Salgado Araujo had been shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent as he drove his construction crew to work in Houston last week, a Vatican representative was meeting with immigrant families at a Houston Catholic parish.
