United Kingdom, with rising living costs and limited financial prospects driving a sharp rise in youth emigration, according to a new report.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"2\"\/>According to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), between 130,000 and 140,000 Britons aged 20 to 29 emigrated in the year to June 2025\u2014well above pre-pandemic levels of around 92,000 to 95,000 in 2018.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"4\"\/>The trend signals a major generational shift, with younger adults now choosing to move abroad earlier than previous generations.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"6\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h3>\u2018Great Gen Z Exodus\u2019 report flags shift<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"8\"\/>The findings are backed by The Great Gen Z Exodus report by The TEFL Academy, which highlights how Britons are no longer waiting until their 30s to relocate.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"12\"\/>Instead, many are opting to leave in their 20s, driven by changing career priorities and global opportunities.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"14\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h3>Cost of living driving decisions<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"16\"\/>Economic pressure has emerged as the biggest trigger behind the migration wave.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"18\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"cdatainfo   id-r-component \" data-pos=\"19\">\n<ul>\n<li>Over 86 per cent of respondents said UK wages do not match the cost of living<\/li>\n<li>Nearly 79 per cent reported constant financial stress<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>The report suggests that for many young people, moving abroad is increasingly seen as a pathway to a better quality of life.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"21\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h3>Majority planning or considering move<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"23\"\/>The survey findings underline the scale of the trend:<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"25\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"cdatainfo   id-r-component \" data-pos=\"26\">\n<ul>\n<li>33 per cent have already moved abroad<\/li>\n<li>26 per cent are actively planning to leave<\/li>\n<li>30 per cent are seriously considering relocating<\/li>\n<li>Only 11 per cent have no plans to emigrate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Overall, nearly three-quarters of those leaving the UK are now under 35.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"29\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h3>Changing definition of success<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"31\"\/>Rhyan O\u2019Sullivan, Managing Director at The TEFL Academy, said young Britons are \u201cnot running away from the UK, but running toward opportunity.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"33\"\/>For many graduates, teaching English overseas has emerged as a practical route to gain international exposure, improve earnings, and build global careers.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"35\"\/>The report, based on a March 2026 survey of young adults along with labour market and migration data, highlights a broader rethink among Gen Z about stability and success.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"37\"\/>International mobility, once seen as optional, is now being viewed as essential for financial security and career growth, marking a shift in how the younger generation approaches work and life.<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a
