{"id":26227,"date":"2026-06-25T01:35:41","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T20:05:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/banitoday.com\/as-ebola-spreads-in-war-torn-eastern-congo-faith-leaders-adapt\/"},"modified":"2026-06-25T01:35:41","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T20:05:41","slug":"as-ebola-spreads-in-war-torn-eastern-congo-faith-leaders-adapt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/banitoday.com\/hi\/as-ebola-spreads-in-war-torn-eastern-congo-faith-leaders-adapt\/","title":{"rendered":"As Ebola spreads in\u00a0war-torn\u00a0eastern Congo, faith leaders adapt\u00a0\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">NAIROBI, Kenya (RNS) \u2014 For nearly two years, evangelical preacher Francis Mbombo traveled from house to house and through displacement camps in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, praying with families uprooted by conflict and comforting those grieving loved ones lost to years of civil war.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Then Ebola struck.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When\u00a0authorities imposed\u00a0restrictions on gatherings to curb the spread of the deadly virus, Mbombo was forced to suspend much of his ministry. He worried about the people he had built spiritual connections with and wondered how they would cope without prayer,\u00a0counseling\u00a0and the physical presence of their church community.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhen I heard about the Ebola outbreak, I was shocked,\u201d Mbombo told\u00a0RNS. \u201cI\u00a0felt like my mission had come to an end.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0highly contagious and often fatal\u00a0virus has compounded the suffering of communities still trying to recover from years of armed conflict. Families that lost relatives during the violence now fear losing loved ones to disease, while restrictions aimed at\u00a0containing\u00a0Ebola have made it difficult for churches to comfort the sick and\u00a0accompany\u00a0grieving families.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Instead of visiting congregants, Mbombo now relies on phone calls and text messages to encourage them. Last week, he prayed over the phone with a church member whose child was gravely ill. Cities such as\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/news\/briefing-notes\/unhcr-seeks-urgent-support-violence-eastern-dr-congo-leaves-hundreds-thousands\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Goma and Bukavu<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0have become refuges for displaced families. Many\u00a0depend on churches and faith communities for shelter, emotional\u00a0support\u00a0and\u00a0financial\u00a0stability.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Congolese authorities declared the latest Ebola outbreak on May 15, and health officials say it has spread rapidly across the country. As of Tuesday (June 23), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2026\/06\/1167786\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">1,048 confirmed cases and 267 deaths<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> had been reported, making it \u201cthe largest number of confirmed cases in the first month of an Ebola disease outbreak in Africa,\u201d according to Dr. Abdirahman Mahamud, director of Health Emergency Alert and Response Operations at the World Health Organization, who recently returned from a monthlong mission in the DRC.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:235}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<hr\/>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The outbreak is centered in\u00a0Ituri\u00a0province but has spread to neighboring North Kivu and South Kivu, regions already struggling with conflict and mass displacement. (Map courtesy of Wikimedia\/Creative Commons)<\/span><span class=\"credit\"\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pastor Albert Nswadi of Goma International Pentecostal Church said the outbreak has forced churches to suspend services and midweek fellowship meetings, where members gathered in one another\u2019s homes to pray and encourage each other.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cEverything has been suspended, and this has affected our faith community,\u201d Nswadi said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The changes have been especially painful during times of mourning.\u00a0Nswadi recalled that one of his congregants was suspected of dying from Ebola in late May, but many church members were afraid to attend the burial because of the risk of infection.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt was very painful as a church\u00a0not to go\u00a0and bury one of us,\u201d he said. \u201cSome people took the risk, and we thank God they were not infected. He encouraged Christians not to lose hope despite the combined challenges of insecurity and disease.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cLet us not lose courage,\u201d the archbishop wrote. \u201cLet us place our full trust in God \u2026 and not give in to fear.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For Mbombo, however, the greatest challenge is finding new ways to minister to people carrying the burdens of both war and disease.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">His calling has always been to walk alongside families in their darkest moments, praying with them in their homes and offering hope to those struggling with loss.
