The disorder first appeared when he was six years old as abnormal posturing of the fingers in his right hand before spreading to his neck, trunk and both sides of the body. Over the years, the condition made walking increasingly difficult and severely affected his daily activities.Despite treatment in Bangladesh and consultations with specialists in Singapore and South Korea, including medicines, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, his symptoms continued to worsen. After evaluating the case, doctors at the Medanta hospital in Gurgaon recommended Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), a procedure in which electrodes are implanted in movement-control areas of the brain and connected to a battery-powered device that regulates abnormal brain signals. Often referred to as a “brain pacemaker”, the device delivers controlled electrical impulses that help reduce abnormal movements.Within days of the surgery, the boy’s muscle spasms reduced significantly, his posture improved and he was able to walk more comfortably and independently. Doctors also reported improved function of his upper limbs.Dr Anirban Deep Banerjee, director-neurosurgery at Medanta, said DBS can be life-changing for carefully selected patients with severe dystonia who do not respond to conventional treatment. “The child had undergone years of unsuccessful treatment attempts. The improvement seen after DBS has been extremely encouraging,” he added.Experts say awareness of rare movement disorders remains low, often delaying diagnosis and treatment. While there is no cure for DYT1 dystonia, advanced therapies such as DBS can significantly improve quality of life and help patients regain independence.

Source link

New Delhi: A 12-year-old boy from Bangladesh who had gradually lost the ability to walk normally due to a rare genetic movement disorder has regained mobility after undergoing a specialised “brain pacemaker” surgery at a private hospital. The child was suffering from DYT1 dystonia, a rare inherited neurological condition that causes severe involuntary muscle contractions, abnormal […]

[150

post-26202","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-delhi
["GET
