<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\nNew Delhi: The Public Works Department (PWD) has decided to conduct structural audits of 44 flyovers that are more than 15 years old. Some of these have been in use for nearly three decades.The city today has 102 flyovers, many of which were built during the infrastructure push of the early 2000s. PWD has earmarked around Rs 11 crore for the audit of the 44 structures. The 11 structures shortlisted for audit in the first round are the Naraina flyover (2010), Lajpat Nagar-Srinivaspuri flyover (2006), Safdarjung (AIIMS) flyover (2003), Sarai Kale Khan flyover (2003), Africa Avenue flyover (2009), DND flyover (2008), Ghazipur flyover (2010), the flyover near Akshardham on NH-56 (2010), the Ring Road intersection flyover at IP Estate (1982), the ITO Chungi underpass (2009) and the Maa Anandmai Marg flyover (2004).In recent years, defects have been found in some of the flyovers. A TOI report in March highlighted issues such as surface ravelling and depressions caused by repeated tyre pressure, cracks in the asphalt due to age and traffic load, and damage in the expansion joints, If expansion joints loosen, they can lead to uneven movement and discomfort for motorists.PWD minister Parvesh Verma said the initiative was aimed at preventing problems before they escalate into safety risks. \u201cPublic safety cannot wait for a crisis. As Delhi continues to grow, the safety and reliability of our infrastructure become more critical. Many of our flyovers have been serving citizens for more than 15 years…. By initiating a comprehensive structural audit of 44 such flyovers, we are taking a scientific approach to assess their condition, identify potential concerns at an early stage and plan interventions,,\u201d he said.\u201cThis exercise is not merely an inspection. It is an investment in the safety, confidence and convenience of Delhi\u2019s citizens,\u201d the minister said. \u201cOur govt is committed not only to creating new infrastructure but also to ensuring that existing assets remain strong, secure and capable of serving future generations,\u201d Verma added. “We are reinforcing our commitment to preventive maintenance, transparency and world-class urban infrastructure standards for the people of Delhi.\u201dA structural audit typically involves a detailed examination of deck slabs, carriageway surfaces, bearings and expansion joints, along with an assessment of pre-stressed concrete components. Engineers inspect a structure for cracks, corrosion and other signs of distress using specialised testing and condition assessment techniques. The findings help determine the remaining service life of the flyover and form the basis for recommendations on repairs, strengthening measures or, where necessary, major rehabilitation and reconstruction.<\/div>\n
