<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\nMadikeri<\/span>:<\/span> Monsoon<\/a> showers have not begun as expected in the agriculturally dominant Kodagu district this year, worrying farmers who depend on rain amid predictions of a state-wide deficiency.Last year, the monsoon arrived in the district towards the end of May, and by mid-June, several days of holidays were declared for schools and colleges. The district also experienced floods twice during this period. This year, however, the situation is the opposite, with water levels in the Cauvery and Harangi rivers receding sharply.Except for occasional showers, sunny weather continues across the district.Compared to the same period last year, Kodagu has recorded a decline of 635mm in rainfall, receiving 254mm so far this year against 889mm last year \u2014 a drop of about 71%. Average rainfall across taluks has also decreased significantly.Due to the shortfall, paddy cultivation work has been delayed. Some farmers were preparing for the sowing season by now, but scanty showers have affected activity. Farmers are also worried about the lack of rain for coffee plantations.\u201cThough it is June, it is impossible to go out without an umbrella, not due to showers but because of the heat wave<\/a>,\u201d locals said.The weather forecast, however, offers some relief, predicting rain from June 22 to 27. There is a 90% chance of rain on June 22, with 60% to 80% expected in the following days.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
