Martin Luther King Jr., Juneteenth is a time for remembrance and unity.<\/p>\n<p>For the Rev. Stephen A. Green, an African Methodist Episcopal minister, it\u2019s a moment for supporting voting rights and spiritual freedom.<\/p>\n<p>For Bishop Garland Hunt, a nondenominational evangelical pastor, it is an opportunity to celebrate Black achievement and counter abortion rights.<\/p>\n<p>As faith leaders mark the Friday (June 19) holiday that commemorates the date in 1865 when more than 250,000 enslaved people in Texas learned they were free \u2014 two-and-a-half years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation \u2014 they are reflecting on that history while also looking ahead to work they say remains to improve an almost 250-year-old America. Photo courtesy of King<\/span><span class=\"credit\"\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>King, a member of a nondenominational Full Gospel church in Atlanta, is an organizer of a Juneteenth celebration on Saturday at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The panel was moderated by Kimberly Mazyck and included Bishop-elect Robert Boxie III, Melvin Rogers and Diann Rust-Tierney. And I think that as we acknowledge the contributions of the African American community to America, it\u2019s appropriate for us to lead the way in unifying and making a call for unity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At an online Georgetown University event on Monday timed to Juneteenth, Bishop-elect Robert Boxie III, the Catholic chaplain for Howard University, also expressed the need for Juneteenth and the 250th anniversary of the country to be times of healing and solidarity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, this whole division stuff that we are experiencing, this disunity, that\u2019s tiring and exhausting,\u201d said Boxie, who has been appointed a new auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Washington and was a panelist for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PAS_Urcn7k0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the \u201c250 Years Towards Racial Justice\u201d event<\/a> of the university\u2019s Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life. \u201cWe\u2019re all called to be these agents of healing and of reconciliation, in demanding it and in participating (in) it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At other events planned to mark Juneteenth, leaders from a range of ideological stances will host events that celebrate Black accomplishments and emphasize concerns ranging from religious freedom to voter education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur focus is not only celebrating the past, (acknowledging) the present, but also we want to guide people in the overall trajectory of the history and the journey of Black America toward Christ and toward the Bible,\u201d said Hunt, president of the Douglass Leadership Institute, a national conservative Christian organization of Black leaders that is named for abolitionist <a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2022\/10\/11\/pbs-docs-depict-frederick-douglass-and-harriet-tubmans-paths-of-freedom-faith\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frederick Douglass<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4264629\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 439px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/bishop-garland-hunt-photo-courtesy-hunt\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4264629\" src=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/webRNS-Bishop-Garland-Hunt-20260617.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"439\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/webRNS-Bishop-Garland-Hunt-20260617.jpg 700w, https:\/\/religionnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/webRNS-Bishop-Garland-Hunt-20260617-427x254.jpg 427w, https:\/\/religionnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/webRNS-Bishop-Garland-Hunt-20260617-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/religionnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/webRNS-Bishop-Garland-Hunt-20260617-600x357.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 439px) 100vw, 439px\"\/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text edd-enabled\"><span class=\"caption\">Bishop Garland Hunt. Photo courtesy of Hunt<\/span><span class=\"credit\"\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>His institute\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/web.cvent.com\/event\/523c2efe-a56d-4289-8a2c-8cd1cf466e18\/summary?blm_aid=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Juneteenth Jubilee<\/a> brunch at a Tysons Corner, Virginia, hotel, will honor Ken Blackwell, a Republican activist and senior fellow of the Family Research Council, who will also be the keynote speaker. Institute leaders also plan to launch their new initiative, called Jeremiah 1:5 Sunday, to urge Black clergy to discuss \u201cthe protection of babies in the womb\u201d from their pulpits on the last Sunday in August. (The Bible verse begins \u201cBefore I formed you in the womb, I knew you.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not a Republican-Democrat issue, it\u2019s a God issue, and we do want to keep the judgment of God away from our nation,\u201d said Hunt, who said the institute is also working to educate voters about a proposed Virginia amendment on reproductive freedom that includes the right to abortion. \u201cWe thought we had a little bit of reprieve when the Roe v. Wade was overturned, but seemingly state after state after state is enshrining abortion as part of their constitution by amendment.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile in New York, Green plans to host \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.allencathedral.org\/rocktheblessings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rock the Blessings<\/a>,\u201d an event the evening of Juneteenth featuring gospel music performances and calls to action at his Greater Allen AME Cathedral in Queens. It is set to be emceed by LL Cool J, a rapper who runs the company Rock the Bells and a church member, Green said. Scheduled performers include Hezekiah Walker, Smokie Norful and Jekalyn Carr.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,800 are expected to attend the Queens event, with the Rev. Callais, which really ups the ante at this particular moment, and why we\u2019re gathering on this Juneteenth,\u201d said Green, referring to the ruling that <a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2026\/05\/08\/black-clergy-strategize-preach-pray-after-voting-rights-act-gutted-by-high-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gutted the Voting Rights Act over a month ago<\/a>. \u201cAnd New York City will be in the middle of its own primary election on June 23, and so we\u2019re trying to encourage people to vote on that particular weekend, as well as we look towards November as a way to encourage people to engage in their civic duty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next day, his church plans to support a \u201cWe Fight We Win\u201d rally that is a continuation of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2026\/05\/15\/black-church-leaders-will-march-in-selma-over-erosion-of-voting-rights-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">All Roads Lead to the South<\/a>\u201d mobilization held in Alabama in May, shortly after the court\u2019s Voting Rights Act ruling.<\/p>\n<p>Green, who previously <a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2023\/06\/12\/reparations-campaign-takes-new-forms-with-bible-study-juneteenth-march\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">led a reparations-focused Juneteenth march in Washington<\/a> from the King memorial to the White House, said he\u2019s a proponent of being active on the holiday marking Juneteenth as well as the one that honors the civil rights leader in January.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think about the King Day and using that King weekend as a day on and not a day off,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re bringing that same thrust to the Juneteenth weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2026\/05\/15\/black-church-leaders-will-march-in-selma-over-erosion-of-voting-rights-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black church leaders to march in Selma this weekend over Voting Rights Act ruling<\/a><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><!-- CONTENT END 1 -->\n        <\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2026\/06\/17\/not-a-day-off-for-juneteenth-some-faith-leaders-promote-political-causes\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(RNS) \u2014 For Christian evangelist Alveda King, niece of the Rev.
